Post subject:  Stuck ERG

Left the CRD at the dealership this morning, MIL has been on since last Thursday.
Just got the call, stuck ERG valve. They said they replaced it. Sound familiar to anyone?:-)
Luckily it is still under warranty... until the 21st of this month! Guess I better start
spending more time learning about the CRD issues and less time on the
4x4/tire/lift/bumper/snorkel threads.

(Bought used, has right at 31,000 miles and apparently 3 years old on Oct 21st)

I just had my egr valve replaced today for the first time. I have 47000 miles on it. I am sure glad I bought extended warranty. Dealer said it would have cost $798.

I went to get my Jeep inspected. Dealer said they had to replace the ERG valve for $550.00. Mil light came on 5 miles down the road. Same code. I have yet to call Chrysler to triple check that the ECU upgrade was really done on my Jeep. Everyone said it has but there isn't a recall sticker on the fuse box.

At least I got my inspection done for the year. check engine light still on for now. I check the codes every week to be sure it isn't throwing a different code.

Check over on CRD Tech - look at ORM/SEGR mods - also EHM/Provent
might check lift pumps while you're at it.

These aren't really issues about failures - they're Chrysler 'designed in' features.

Same thing happened to me. Make sure they replace the FCV, Flow Control Valve as well. When the dealer replaced the EGR & FCV on my CRD the MIL light went out and stayed out.

Post subject:  Intermittent PO401 code

I replaced for the first time my EGR approx. 10k miles ago (46,000 on vehicle). Last week the infamous PO401 was read after the MIL came on.I checked EGR, cleaned hoses and wiped out the FCV--not much oil residue in either. Reset code and the MIL stayed out for about three days then returned. It was only PO401 again. The MIL the went out by itself and then returned the following day. It is currently on and reading PO401 again. Any thoughts. Replace the FCV although it appears to be functioning properly. Thanks for any advice

The problem is that your EGR valve is periodically sticking. In all honesty, your best bet would be to pull it off, remove the solenoid from the top of it, and soak the bottom valve part in a solvent to free it up. Sure beats spending a lot of money on one.

Thanks.

Picked up the Jeep this morning.

Quick update (quoted for paper-work)

Codes listed:
P0401/P0101
P0299
"EGR FAILURE ON A DIELSEL ENGINE LIBERTY"

"Ran scan test and found (above codes) EGR FAILURE. Tested system and found EGR valve assembly
with internal failure. Replaced EGR valve assembly on diesel engine. Cleared codes and flash/updated
engine control module. Retested system and all OK.

It has been good so far today. Just hope it stays that way, and if not, I hope it comes back before my
warranty goes out!

Oh, and I can tell a big difference now, when I turn it off. A LOT smoother!

Also, it isn't listed on my paperwork but I had to sign the warranty claim and it
stated 450 some odd dollars as the cost.

Post subject:  Same codes here...

Hope your replacement works. Mine is still throwing the same codes even after the $450.00 repair.

My mil came on 5 miles down the road.

I got mine back yesterday. They replaced the EGR airflow control throttle body, and the electronic throttle valve. That is what my ticket says on it anyway but it doesn't tell me the original code.

Post subject:  Just read through the manual

It looks like a pretty simple job to replace the FCV or clean it out. Does removing the "generator to intake manifold support support bracket" change the belt tension at all?

I haven't looked at it yet, too dark outside at 5:45am...

I assume if the FCV is stuck then the SEGR will not work as expected even if the mil is turned off. Is that a fair assumption?

The Provent is working great but I am sure the valve is clogged up pretty good with oil given the look of the CAC Outlet hose. and my MAP sensor before cleaning(wet with oil). I will try cleaning it first with tooth brush and diesel fuel. Is this a possible solution?

Well my CRD lasted 2 days and then the same codes came back. The dealer has it again. He said it was the same 2 EGR codes.

Post subject:  I opted out with the dealer...

I decided not to take it back and waste more money. Wouldn't refund my diagnostic code would want to charge me more to do more diagnostics and the labor to fix what they didn't fix before.

Time to write a few letters.

Well I just got my CRD back today. The dealer said the same code came up again so they called Chrysler troubleshooting and they told them to remove and clean out the EGR Valve. It was very dirty probably because I run the EHM, but the ORM never seemed to help with fuel mileage at all,so I didn't bother with it, I also hate having the cel on. The troubleshooting hotline also told the dealer that the reason it had so much crud in was because only Mobil 1 0w40 must be used for oil. I told them that my owners manual did not say that, I told them the manual said that 5w30 could be used also. I also told him that Rotella synthetic is also rated higher than Mobil 1. He said that he didn' know but that is what the troubleshooting hotline told him.
