| Post subject: | 3rd EGR |
Has anyone else had to have three EGRs put in their CRD? I only have 29,500 miles on it and this is the 3rd one that they have put in it. Of course, it is out of warranty because I have had it over 3 years, and the EGR is not covered under the extended warranty. They also mentioned something about an "oil" something or the other that also had to be replaced. I am a 63 year old grandmother that does not know anything about cars. The CEL had been coming on and going off for about 2 weeks, and finally it stayed on so I could take it into the dealer. I have the 7/70 extended warranty, but the original 3/36 warranty is up because I have had the car for more than 3 years. I use Shell Diesel fuel and Powersevice DieselKleen with every fill up. Other than that, the car has been great and drives perfectly. I have had all the recalls done and the turbocharger was replaced. I have not done any modifications to it because I have the 7/70 extended warranty and I didn't want to void that. Is there a reason the EGRs keep needing to be replaced? Or is this just something the dealer does because they don't know what else to do? |

Make sure they replace the flow control valve (FCV). I had an EGR replaced and the MIL came on before I got home (about a 5 mile drive). They installed a second EGR and the MIL came back on again. After the FCV was replaced there were no more problems. |

X2 on the FCV! I know mine is bad because a while back the gears in it sounded like a coffee grinder for about a week |

The flow control valve has been replaced. The car is running fine - no symptoms other than the check engine light coming on. |

I don't know what the codes were. I can try to find out. Where would I find a list of what the codes mean? |

In my personal opinion, I believe that a provent or EHM helps overall I have taken an EGR completely apart and posted detailed pictures in the CRD Tech Forum. One of two things can go wrong with the EGR. First the electic control portion of the EGR is operated by a magnet that pushes or pulls a pintle that opens or closes the EGR. The EGR has a water cooled collar keeps the electric control portion of the EGR from overheating, and breaking the circuitry electro-magnet that operates the pintle. Second, the mechanical portion of the EGR is a spring operated "plunger like" valve that opens and closes when the electro-magnet operates the pintle. Their can be so much soot and crud formed around the "plunger valve" that it stops operating. Lastly, unless the electic control portion of the EGR is"fried" you can take the EGR and place the cavity that houses the "plunger valve" in a solvent and let it soak and clean it yourself before assembling it back. |

I am on number three now. After the first one went, they replaced #2 at about 32K. That one went at about 37K, and you could imagine I was pretty furious with the dealer. I told them that this type of part should definitely not be failing in 5,000 miles and I was not going to pay upwards of $1000 to get it fixed for something that just barely got me out of the warranty. I would make them clean your induction system, completely flush it, this is what they did for me this last time around that they did not do on the 2nd EGR. This is why is probably went bad so quickly, it was just feeding the built up krud right though a new EGR. They only charged me like $250 for the flush and the service manager covered the EGR and labor, as well they should have. Good luck! |
