75mph Tundra vs. 55mph CRD

I was rear ended by a Tundra while I was doing 55 on the highway. I was shocked that I was able to keep it under control and the little damage I got. It just pushed in 1/2" the rear door where the spare carrier bolts on (pictures later). The spare hit the bumper and it looks like the receiver took a hit too. The Tundra was towed due to damage and the wasted driver. My 12 year old and myself were fine. What other damage should I be looking for??? Drivetrain, transfer case, tranny??

I sure that you are ok. Neck and back injury can show up the next day. I was hit when my Jeep was new and my hitch punched a large hole in the Toy Olla front bumper and grill. Woman talking on a cell phone was surprised when I-95 traffic stopped.

She hit me square so it was not hard too keep it in line. I don't know if it helped or not but I had 6 40 pound bags of salt, 5 50 pound bags of goat food in the back. I did have a disposable camera in the glove box and took some pictures of the Tundra but the heat got the film, they were all gray. I'll look and see if I can find out where it was towed to. I like the Goodyear impression in the dirt in the bumper. Also my factory hitch looks funny because I cut out and replaced the darn short tube with a longer one (about 3")... I guess my welds held ok

Another way of looking at the crash: although you were rear ended by a vehicle traveling 75MPH, the impact was the same as if you were parked and were hit at 20 MPH (assuming your car was in neutral and the parking brake was not engaged).

I have a tundra also, (2008) and I can see that the Tundra would suffer quite a bit of damage rear-ending a liberty. It looks like the Tundra grille would hit the spare tire while most of the bumper would go under. Lot's of damage to the grille, radiator, and etc could easily occur. Even more so if the driver was on the brakes and the nose dipped.

I can not imagine how one can re-end a moving vehicle....sleeping, cell phone. putting on makeup?????

You could have sat my spare in the hole it made. They are made to crunch up and protect the passengers. Other driver was kind of wacked out on pain killers, she never hit the brakes till after the crunch.

You are very lucky the rear window didn't POP and shoot glass into your Jeep. The 2002-2007 Libertys are a tuff breed.

Good to hear your both alright!

As for the car, get a mechanic to find out if all the wheels are still straight (4-wheel alignment), if they are, the frame is probably OK.

I was tagged in the back by a 10 mph Geo Metro two years back. New tailgate skin and spare tire and she was good to go. Geo lost the grille, hood, probably radiator and crossmember...

After that I started carrying the Hensley tow bar in the hitch. For those who haven't seen one, it's a solid steel 2" x 2" bar. Makes a nice square impression in Silverado front bumpers...

Considering the price that Hensley charges for the bar, I'd want to lock it securely.

Cell phone plus late for his tee time at the golf course, for the guy in the '04 Explorer that t-boned my '87 MB - same story, didn't even bother hitting the brakes. Plus, the way that 3500 lb MB got spun around and thrown 30 feet like a rag doll, he had to be doing well in excess of the posted 45 mph.

Other guy seemed rather contrite and sheepish, as if to say by his body language he knew if he'd been paying attention and not speeding he could have avoided the accident. And when his wife showed up to pick him up, you could tell by her body language she was flat-out pissed off at him - as if this was not the first time in recent history this had happened.
