Post subject:  Anybody else have gear whine???

My CRD has been getting a louder and louder whine that sounds like it is coming from the rear. It is present all the time now as long as I'm moving. Had the tires rotated, have serviced the diff at specified times, but it is still there. Have an appointment with the stealer on friday to see if they'll check it out under the power train warranty.

Yes, the whine just got progressively worse until my diff broke completely.

The stealer said they wanted to replace the carrier bearing and still wanted to charge me out of warranty although when i reported the diff whine ,she was still under warranty. In fact she was 240km's out of warranty when all this crap with them started and that's when i vowed never to buy another Chrysler product :x

I eventually took it to a small garage and paid the equivalent of a 1000 USD. After 4000km's, the whine is slowly starting again that's why i want to change the rear diff oil and fill with some synthetic if i can get.

What is the powertrain warranty all about :?:

Well my 2005 CRD had a 3/36,00 bumper to bumper warranty, and a 7/70,000 powertrain warranty. I have 60k + on it and am hoping it will be covered.

Well got my KJ back from the stealer monday evening. They replaced everything in the diff, bearings, gears and all. Nice and quiet now. I asked what they found and they said ???, tech figured it was easier to replace it all than troubleshoot. Cost me $100 deductable and the 7/70 took care of the rest.

What kind of lube did you use during the servicing of the diff? I have over 60K on mine with 30K of that being hard towing and not any problem. If someone done the service for you, maybe they just used regular lube and not synthetic.

I have been doing it my self using Royal Purple. Before I took it in, I pulled the cover and expected to see some metal or maybe pitting on the ring but it was spotless. Maybe I just had a bad bearing from the get go.

Post subject:  Whine in My Rennie

I just came back for the dealer ( stealer? I like that!) and they diagnosed my whine as carrier bearings and pinion bearings. 1000 $ plus estimate.

This 03 Renegade has only 115 KM or 70K miles. Not sure what the std warranty is but I did buy exteneded - but it seems to also be done...

It does seem like a design flaw for these to go at such a low mileage - This unit has not seen any offroad fun.

Any advice? Mister Transmission? other shops ( I am in Windsor Ontario but I go to Toronto weekly) I have had it serviced at the dealer since I bought it 2 yrs ago - as did the previous owner. They did do the pinion bearing seals 6 months ago.

Thanks

That was the cause of the failure. Most places and people will just zip the pinion nut noff and pull the yoke off, change the seal and slap the yoke on and and use a impact to tighten the pinion nut.

That is the wrong way to do that seal in the 8.25.The 8.25 uses a crush sleave that must be changed every time that seal is replaced with a specific torque, then backed off for proper seating that will not over pre-load the pinion bearings and cause early failure.

Some feedback on my diff whine - my diff underwent major surgery after 48K and then started to whine soon after the repair.

I changed the diff oil to 85W - 140 as i was towing during the Xmas period and have had no whine or clunking noises that i had heard before. I have not added any LSD additives as i only have trak lok with the manual trans.

Post subject:  More on the Pinon -

When I asked why they failed- I was put on hold... the tech came back with a vague, "they just 'go' some times..." and "they wear out" - needless to say I was not impressed - however- they did not yet disassemble it just listened AND this was a different dealer then I used before. I did think that the original dealer was rushing the work I did have done.

I might take it to an independent - but I am not sure if I could prove anything. Thus not very satisfying. I DO have a transmission friend about 2hours away - it might be worthwhile to have him check it.

Thanks for your help!

They do not "just" go bad sometimes, there was a cause and a improper pinion seal install was the fault.I bet all the money in the world that they did not replace the crush sleave and set the proper preload torque on the pinon bearing causing to much/little preload which lead to early failure.

Post subject:  I guess I need to confront the Dealer...

Not sure how I can do this, but I guess I should just confront the dealer and try and see if they will fess up.

They might bury the evidence if they open her up and if I go elsewhere they might suggest I sould have come to them. I guess the best thing is a direct and frank discussion.

It's a roll of the dice.
