Welll I am on the second tank here in the US and I can tell you this, fuel here SUCKS. The KJ CRD has NEVER smoked this much, I hate it.

Smoking can be due to over fueling as well as the crappy US fuels. How many kilometres or miles on your KJ? If over 8000 miles or about 13000km, the smoking maybe due in part to a dirty Boost Pressure Sensor (see my recent other post about cleaning this, for some reason the people in the US seem to call this a MAP sensor but the Service Manual uses the Boost Pressure Senor designation). Secondly try to find a source of ultra low sulfur fuel, <50ppm preferably and with a cetane rating of 50.

All US diesel is ULSD, MAP is just used because it is the generic term for that sensor that is used in the US. Generally we refer to MAP or MAF based engine management.

I'm pretty sure jinstall knows to clean the MAP though.

You seem to be a bit behind the times down there on the bottom of the world Glend. One would be hard put to find a fuel pump in the US that isn't ULSD. A Cetane level of 50 is also hard to find. I don't personally know of any fuel station which posts the Cetane rating on the pump anymore. All that they are required to say is "meets Federal requirements". Federal requirements are for the fuel to have a minimum of 42 cetane. Even the premium Diesel which is hard to find does not give the cetane level. All we can do is dream about E-spec D2 and dump additives into the fuel which is a poor substitute for the real thing.

Ain't it the truth! It is a sad state of affairs when Mexican fuel is of higher quality than what we can get here. If someone were to open up a specialty station offering quality fuels, I wonder if it would be a success?

GLEND, thanks for trying to help Jinstall out, what you don't know is that he just came back to the US after being in Germany/Europe for some time. ( and his KJ was there too!)

So he now feels / sees the difference in fuel quality.

Thanks Tony and everyone else. I drove for a while with the 1/4 tank that came from Germany and no smoke. Now on my second tank of US fuel and it smokes alot. The local Hess station I now use has the C-Rating on the pump and says 45. In Germany you have normal and Super and that was that was on th epump.

jinstall - Try the station near the Pentagon. It used to be called "Circle-K" or something like that. They sell B20 and my CRD ran great on that.

They sell ethanol, natural gas and B20. The B20 pumps are all the way to the far right as you drive in.

jinstall: Lousy Cetain fuel needs more oxygen for the engine to run right. Shutting off the EGR helps. With out getting on the soap box again, the EGR is to reduce NOX and under perfect conditions NOX can cause smog. Even though due to the advancement of better environmental stewardship, the perfect conditions for NOX to turn into smog in the US are becoming more rare, we are saddled with ever more increasing restrictions that have vastly exceeded the point of diminishing returns. Since Politicians, so called Scientists on the Government payroll, and bureaucrats, never admit they make any errors, ever; we are stuck with these regulations.
The next move is urea injected into the exhaust.

Which Hess are you getting your fuel from? I get fuel some times from Hess in Arlington with no issues. Best/cheapest place is the Sunoco on 495 & Braddock, but its currently going under upgrades.

The airfilter was new when I shipped it from Germany on the 6th of October. Fresh oil change as well.

Check the air filter, anyway: remove it and hold it up to sunlight, make sure it is not contaminated - everyone else's CRD's don't smoke on this fuel, neither should your production-line version - however, they all will smoke with restricted air supply - likely, right now you're just guessing - do the easy checks first: air filter or\and restricted air supply - then dirty MAP sensor (which measures all pressure levels in the intake manifold, not just Boost pressure) - troubleshooting steps eliminate the good stuff - what's left must be bad

I suspect Jinstall has not adapted his right foot to US speed limits yet
But it's still possible his CRD rode on the deck of the ship and got exposed to lots of salt laden ocean air

My Mule doesn't normally smoke. Even when seen through head lights. It will however emit a puff of grayish smoke when I stomp it after an hour or so of easy driving. The only time that I can see noticeable smoke At night is when I Run more than 30% Dark Matter. When and if my TC fails and gets replaced with a Suncoast, I will be able to get a Kerma custom tune with an Edge or similar Smokebox. Then I will make some Sweet smog.

One good note is that the fuel milage has gone up by 30% compared to overseas, I am currently looking at a 430 miles tank or more.
