Hi there .....long time no see!
I finally had my first (and hopefully last?) brakedown with my Jeep this morning ...
Was driving along the highway ... no problem at all ... then got off the highway, and at the first traffic light, the engine just cut out ... no engine light ...nothing ...
I did the normal procedure to check error codes ....nothing ...no error codes ...
When I switch the ignition on and turn the key, the the starter turns the engine, but it just doesn't start ... as if there is simply no diesel coming through ... I checked basicly everything .... there is more than half a tank of fuel left.... the oil level and water levels are fine ... everything looks well ...uhmmm ..OK! ...but the freekin thing just doesn't wanna start .... I even disconnected the battery and left it off for 20 minutes .....still no change ...
Any idea what might cause this problem, without lighting the engine light or giving error codes????

Did you try to purge air from the fuel filter head? You will need an 11mm wrench if the same filter head is used as in later models.

If it were the timing belt I would think he would have mentioned an unmistakenable "crunch" when the valves hit the pistons

you would think so.....

however there are very few things that actually work to stop a diesel dead...

ok .... had an "interesting" time trying to see the cause of the problem ... it was the timing belt ... ....actually not the timing belt itself, but one of the pulleys ... we call it the "idling pully" .... it just broke ....still don't understand why, cause the bearing of the pulley still feels smooth, but the surrounding part just disintegrated ...
So tomorrow I'll need to get a new timing belt (I don't trust the old one) ..... a new fanbelt (the old one looks a bit cracked), and an idling pulley ... then put everything back, and then try and start the engine, HOPING that no damage was done to the valves ..
STILL don't understand why NO engine lights came on ... :?

Sounds like this happen suddenly so no light. Changing the timing belt is tricky and you need a few special tools. Hope the valves didn't hit. Service manual is online or I can copy the pages for your if needed.

When doing this repair, you need to pull the cylinder head and check the valves!! We had a customer from a different sector with the same engine that had a timing belt go bad, it made no bad sounds but smoked the valves which ruined the head. Sure, you could maybe replace the valves but the risk of the valve guides also being bad is very high then as well.

So, in conclusion: pull the head and check it (you can reuse the head gasket and bolts so no big expense).

Reusing torque-to-yield headbolts is a recipe for a warped head.

Unfortunately I have had two timing belts break on me in the "lean" years when proper auto maintenance was unaffordable (I thought)....... taught me quite a bit however! :D

Yes, I realize what the manual says...however, in lieu of that, with the multitudes of these engines that I've put together thus far for various purposes, not a single one has had a problem due to reusing of the head bolts.

Sure you can reuse headbolts but you did not mention anything about the head gasket which should never be reused on any engine.Once you crush it and release the pressure off of it it is no longer good even if you just put it on like 5 mins ago.

A description of torque-to yield (TTY) cylinder head bolts and reasons why they should not be reused are shown here: http://www.acl.co.nz/Tech/Torque%20To%2 ... dbolts.pdf

Here's what he wrote!

I've reused them too. But in light of all the work involved I would also use new ones.

It sound like to me he is talking about the serpentine belt and the idle tensioner pulley not the timing belt which is under a black cover is it not. The timing belt is not visible from just looking at the front of the engine.

I thought that too and then I reread Sonix's comment and he distinguishes between Timing and Fan belts - so he is talking about timing.

FYI - when I was younger and broke - I reused a lot of 'one time use' parts and most of the time there wasn't a problem - but I do know from experience that a Fiat twin cam can strip a timing belt (rubber) and take out all 8 valves in about 1 engine revolution - so if at all possible I'd check the valves and use new parts to put it back together - it's cheaper in the long run.

I guess I just don't understand why anyone would reuse TTY head bolts. It's the equivalent of removing the timing belt at 100,000 miles for replacement and reinstalling it because it looked ok.
