Well, I'm into my 3rd week in my newly purchased CRD coming from a 6.0 Powerstroke. I know diesel engines can create voluminous amounts of black smoke under heavy acceleration especially if there is a performance tuner installed 8)
I'm just wondering how much is common on the Jeep CRD? Under jump start acceleration's I can produce noxious amounts (even more than my chipped Powerstroke) of smoke that obviously annoy those behind me. I am also only averaging 20.5 MPG hand calculated with 75% highway driving. Last week I cleaned the MAP sensor and did the EHM. EHM seems to cause additional smoke when idleing. I'm afraid of getting egged by some tree huggers if I don't get the smoking act cleaned up. How much smoke is too much?

I believe the smoke is coming from the EGR system. Try unplugging your MAF sensor and see if it disappears. It would be great if we could easily blow out the EGR pathways. Now that I have a Provent installed I bet the EGR system will work the way it is supposed to.

Do the ORM, replace air and fuel filter.

Sounds like yours is like mine. I can be cruising along part throttle in rush-hour traffic and happen to look behind me and there is so much smoke everyone has backed off! If I lift the throttle then step on it again it will disappear. Hard acceleration will produce black smoke, but apparently not when a "technician" drives it. After fighting for over 2 and a half years with the transmission/smoke/srs light/egr/etc. I've now given up and can't wait for my lease to be over.

Yep, either everyone is backing off or your leaving them in the smoke  Seriously, if I were behind someone producing that much smoke I would back off too wondering, first of all, if there was something seriously wrong with that Jeep and also to escape the smell.
Need some more input from others to see if this is fairly normal after all of the previous suggestions such as air filter, fuel filter, SEGR, ORM, EHM, etc. has been performed.

After checking air filter, put a scantool on it, see if any DTC's - check the turbo ducting hoses for leaks\rips\tears\aneurisms on both, inlet to CAC and outlet from CAC
