| Post subject: | Injector Numbers |
In another post, CRDJON mentioned that "injector numbers are entered into ECU". Anyone know whether when someone like INMOTION "clones" an ECU, this level of "copying" occurs? (I sent them a used ECU to "clone" and program with their Stage II software, but I couldn't really get a straight answer on this particular topic. My impression is that they had not really thought about it, specifically. The implication is that the "cloning" process creates an exact copy.) DOC |

Housekeeping, similar to VIN information required for cloning, is different archival area than is modified - whatever was there previously is over-written to engine parameters associated with the VIN being cloned - the programmer\tech only modifies the operational i\o mapping for air\fuel\timing\EGR\etc |

I've heard that the Duramax ECM uses part numbers from different injectors for differential fueling of individual injectors in the same motor. Instead of using good quality control and flow matching each injector, Bosch just makes the injector tips (by EDM I think) and then flow test them. Different flow rates get different part numbers and the ecm is programmed to compensate the fuel (based on part number) to give matched fuel to the each cylinder. I think the after market has had trouble with this, but I'm not a Duramax guy. Interesting question though. I wonder if they use a similar method for the 2.8 and it does beg the question as to what Inmotion does. To my knowledge, nothing of the like exist for the Cummins (basically same injection system.) |

Two more cylinders, idle quality not as critical in heavier medium-duty chassis' - but it's coming, with 30kpsi and ceramic injectors |

We build diesel fuel injectors where I work. It's not done this way because of lack of quality control. It's done because of the extreme difficulty of holding a tolerance while EDMing multiple 150 micron diameter holes. Injectors would be even more expensive if you tried to make them all flow the same within some arbitrarily tight tolerance. Just let the ECU compensate for the difference. It's cheaply done in software. |

Yes, it is to save money and there's nothing wrong with that. For the average comsumer, there would be no need for the precision of the aftermarket. . Aftermarket injectors are flow matched to a fairly tight tolerances and you pay for that precision/ performance. |
