Post subject:  Air Filter: K&N or Paper?

I have a K&N air filter and have had one for some time now. I have a MAF sensor CEL on right now. I was thinking that it was the SEGR that i put in but i had it cleared and it didnt come back for a long time. Now its back and my air filter was extremely dirty, on the dirty side. I pulled out the MAF sensor and it had black oil on the flow side. I know i didnt over oil the thing last time. Anyone had this problem?

I am thinking of going back to using paper filters and using the NAPA Gold filters.

Dirty air filter results in increased vacuum in the intake - increased vacuum causes the CCV to dump more oil into the intake - at a certain point the CCV will begin regulating that flow, then your fuel economy should start dropping as the air filter clogs even more - paper is good - just maintain it at Diesel interval, not gasser (patooie!) interval

The NAPA gold (WIX) air filters for the CRD have several more pleates then most other brands of air filters including the stock one. Extra pleats means more filtering area. Most here don't care for K&N and also find they need to replace regular filters at every 6k oil change. I've got a Amsoil filter that's cleanable, no oil, that does not have 6 k on it yet but still looks clean.

Don't use either one. Use the Amsoil air filter. I have the K&N drop in filter right now but am going to be getting the Amsoil filter soon. Seems that all who have gone to the Amsoil filters are Super-Satisfied. I hope to be as well...

Send a PM to JJsKJ for a quote to have one shipped directly to you at his dealer cost.

...Until I saw the day light coming through the holes in the media. Holes that are large enough to see light coming through the media like stars on a clear night is not acceptable. I ordered and installed ProGuard 7s for both my CRD and Wife's TDI.
Now I beat big block Tahos at the light when the pavement is wet. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Sometimes the Taho drivers give me the British-Bow-Man's salute (what they gave the French many years ago) when they are spinning out stuck at the light.

OK, I cheat and put it into part time 4X4

K&N would be my last choice...then stock paper...then Napa Paper...then Amsoil. The last three choices are good...better...best if maintained (changed-cleaned). The K&N is really for racing purposes...meaning engines that don't have a long lifespan...

At 0.8 microns, the AMSOIL filter removes 5 times more dust than traditional cellulose filters and 50 times more dust than wet gauze, plus they hold 15 times more dust than a wet gauze type filter.

I'm using the K&N drop in filter haven't had any problems as yet.

At the end of the day, the oil is the filtering medium so if you oil her correctly and maintain it that way then what's the problem with the K&N.

Why do you want to sell it?

This topic has been discussed before, the K & N type filter is fine for road use and the paper type filter for off road, that was the general consensus.

Buy the paper filter and just change them when you know you're going off road

Because Amsoil is a better air filter and doesn’t require oil. Why would you want a filter that is #2 in quality and cost more to maintain?

I think that says it all, and that's why they flow so well, at the expense of passing airborne crap. I run one on my track racer, and. that's. it.

I ordered a true flow and it works well, has 2-stage foam and is cleanable. Should last as long as a k&n...unless you clean it with gasoline. I dont know if it flows quite as well as a k&n would but it doesnt feel restricted when dirty. 10,000-12,000 miles and it feels like it has been freshly cleaned.
I also sprayed a little filter oil inside intake and no sign of dust sticking to it so I know it filters well.
( www.trueflow.com)...sorry dont know how to create a link.

At full siren song, the turbo compressor will vacuum oil from an oiled-mesh filter - not a good idea to run that type filter on any but normally-aspirated systems, particularly where real estate is limited and the filtration media cannot be upsized - the 2.8L CRD filter is same as the 3.7L filter, but requires up to twice the fwot 3.7L flowrate at full Boost - no oily mesh can withstand that draft

X2. The compressor is going to get it's air one way or another. It will either suck the oil out of a K&N or collapse the intake duct, but it WILL get its air.

Meaning that the flow of air will suck the oil from the filter and reduce the efficiency of filtration plus contribute towards the eventual capitulation of the turbo charger plus damage to the cylinder walls due to dirty particulate passing through the inlet manifold.

Is my understanding correct?

Just to update.... I had a CEL for the MAF sensor which i cleaned because it had black dirty oil on it and switched to the NAPA filter and the light went out on its own. Next oil change i will order the Amsoil filter. I am not bashing K&N but i agree that they shouldnt be used in forced induction systems like ours. I will continue to run K&N on the ZJ.

Thanks for everyones input.

I put the K & N through the light test

And then i took my paper filter out of the box...

After that excercise i packed the K & N back in the box and left the paper filter in the airbox.

Anyone want to but my K & N for 30 bucks shipped to any part of the world....
