| Post subject: | stiffer read end for towing |
I've been towing with CRD for couple years now, but I'm starting to get a little squishy(compressing easier) and was thinking that it was time to stiffen up the rear end. What do you guys recommend? Helper spring? New springs? Particular models/makers would be helpful. Thanks in advance, WWV |

Here's a kit from Summit racing. I have a similar kit on my Tahoe, but mine mounts on top of the leaf springs. Anyway, it works the same, air them up when you need to tow, air down when done. I ran my air valve out back, drilled a small hole in license plate and bolted it there. I love mine, keeps the rear nice and level when heavy tongue weight and I don't need the weight distribution hitch. Hmmmm, interesting....easy to install, inexpensive, adds stability ..................what's not to like?!?! My brother was mentioning a helper spring, don't know much about those. I don't think he knew about these. Thanks. WWV |

Helper springs will work, but usually they give you "an all the time stiff ride". The air bags are nice cause you can air them down when not in use and they won't affect the ride. You can also check into coil over shocks, but I have no personal experience with those, just seen them. Stay away from air shocks, they will tear up the mounts. |

I put Sway control on my trailer and it works to get rid of the sloppy rear end feeling you are describing. I like cheap fixes that work. Also check the toe in of your trailer. |

I immediately noticed the rear wiggling under full go in first or second gear when towing, so did my wife. 'What the heck is that?" "That's torque honey, something the last Liberty didn't have." I have a set of AirLift bags that fit inside the rear coils. If I pump em up to 35 psi the rear end lifts 2" and rides hard as a rock. I generally put them at 30 when towing, 10-15 unloaded. I paid a guy at the Goodyear store $400 to install them after hours. They fill through a single schraeder valve he mounted in the back of the rectangular steel tube that's part of the hitch. Wiggling fixed - back end is stable as a rock. The load range E tires (Michelin XP Rib) add a huge amount of stability also. They may ride like bricks unloaded (but I'll take the extra fuel economy thank you) but under load they shine. Two downfalls... Lifting the rear pulls away from the weight distribution of an equalizing hitch, you end up with even more weight on the back. I have a set of load range D (for the winter) and load range E tires, and the axle is pretty much the same as the Durango, so I'm not real worried about that. Even if I put them down to 5 psi (the min recommended) they are still pretty stiff in the winter, so I have to let air out of the rear tires so the overall ride doesn't feel like there's pogo sticks in the back. In the summer you don't notice them unless you pump them up. Air bags are the way to go. Air shocks use the shock mounts to carry load, they aren't meant for that and stiffer springs are always stiffer. |

you could also try a stinger hitch http://stingerhitch.com/index.html it's pretty mucha smaller scale piggy back system. I've talked to a couple of guys that use a fifth wheel piggy back and love it. |
