When discussing oiled mesh vs paper air filtration, several critical points must be recognized and considered, while remembering lessons learned in Science 101 - initially, it must be noted that air does not flow thru oil in oiled-mesh air filtration - as air flows thru the interstices in the oiled mesh, the oiled mesh becomes statically charged, which then attracts the oppositely-charged dust particles - faster the flow, greater the charge - the collected particles then add to the mass of the oil droplets, with resulting increased charge, resulting in increased filtration as the filter becomes 'dirty' - up to a certain point, at which time the filter must be cleaned and re-oiled - manufacturer's maintenance requirements are therefore based upon engine maf/time

The basic problem is not the oiled filtration, but the available real estate - the KJ CRD filter is identical in dimension to the KJ V6 filter, but the Diesel draws full displacement thru that filter on each stroke, where the V6 gasser (patooie!) runs at less than 30% throttle most of it's life, for 30% displacement flow - add the turbo to the CRD, which can increase flowrate thru that smallish filter as much as twice the FWOT flowrate of the V6, and we got problems right here in River City, folks: takes a much larger filter for that kinda action, and we got no available real estate for a larger filter - double the physical area of the filter, L" x W", and an oiled filter would become more practical - increasing the cross-sectional area, the depth, only increases the quantity of dirt that the filter can accumulate, with potential of increased restriction, but does not increase initial air flow capability - double-sized filter would still require periodical cleaning\re-oiling, but the increased area would prevent\reduce vacuuming the oil in the turbo draft - take a quick look under yer hoods to see that we don't have that option, so an oiled-mesh filter, while much more efficient at increasing filtered air flow, is not practical in this application

Nor is eliminating the fresh-air connected airbox to install a larger bare air filter adjacent the turbo and exhaust manifold and directly in the heated airflow from the engine coolant fan

As a side note, all air filters were oil-bath oiled-mesh when I was a young lad, long ago in another century - ND 30wt was the flavor of choice, iirc - paper-element filters were designed for convenience to the auto-repair industry, reducing labor, increasing profits, beneficial to oem mfrs from reduced real estate requirements in the engine bay

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it........................

If the oil is contributing to the problem that is currently under debate here, could one not use something else instead of the recommended oil.

Perhaps the cotton fibre is not so much the problem then but finding something other than the oil we are currently using would be interesting.

I don't have a "Filter Minder" on my Jeep, but a local member does, stock filter and box, and sees no major restriction recorded.

I have, and also am comparing the CRD inlet to the V6 inlet - intention is to do some FWOT duration runs with stock, EDGE Trail, and INMOTION tunes - DCX tunes prolly don't tax the available filter area too heavily, particularly with that flimsy factory filter

i think i am the local member UFO is talking about... i have done FWOT while towing and my filter minder has not moved a bit... even driving throught the sodium chloride spray we have been having... i actually just pulled a 6x6x12 trailer today full of my belongings and nada so far. so i am content with my paper filter... i have had K&N's on my RX& though... they looked dirty real fast

retmil46 got his filter minder to move doing Dyno pulls at a Cummins meet. (or maybe it was Ranger1)

I think they both have Inmotion

Perhaps the high altitude of Colorado has something to do with the differing observations...

The stock KJ CRD will not move the Filterminder with stock DCJ air filtration until the media becomes clogged or wet - increase cross-sectional filtration, as with Amsoil or NAPA Gold, and Filterminder is more responsive - decrease filtration, as with K&N\equiv, and Filterminder will be even less responsive until clogged - increase engine output and Filterminder is more responsive
