If there were a "WTF" folder, I'd probably post this in that folder.

Today, I received a letter from Chrysler, LLC (reproduced below).

Control #A-JGW2.82RX - .....

Dear Chrysler LLC, Customer:

Chrysler LLC, with the assistance of ROUSH INDUSTRIES, INC., is conducting an important test program to measure the emissions performance of privately owned Chrysler cars and trucks. For this reason, we are contacting owners whom our records show purchased a 2005 model year Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicle.

This letter was sent to you to determine if your vehicle meets our program requirements and if you would care to participate. Since we test a limited quantity of vehicles, not everyone who expresses an interest can be selected. If your vehicle is selected, you will be provided with the following incentives:

1) The use of a late-model, fully insured loaner car with a full tank of fuel, while your vehicle is being tested.
2) You will receive a check for $250, and your vehicle will be returned washed and with a full tank of fuel.

The emissions test procedure involves operating the vehicle on a dynamometer, under simulated urban driving conditions, while the exhaust gas is collected and analyzed for emissions pollutants regulated by the Federal Clean Air Act. Sometimes emissions repairs may be needed. Any necessary repairs are performed at absolutely no cost to you. The amount of time we will keep your vehicle usually averages about 5 to 20 working days. During this time, your vehicle will probably accumulate less than 75 miles.

If you are interested in participating in this program, please complete the enclosed reply form .....

Department of Emissions
Certification and Compliance
Chrysler LLC

Has anyone else received one of these?

It appears legit. It was mailed from zip code 48150 - a quick search shows that Roush headquarters is there. It doesn't appear to be diesel-specific.

In the condition Chrysler is in, why would they spend the money / resources to do this? The only thing I can think of is that the EPA is somehow forcing them to do this, and they've outsourced the work to Roush. When I saw that it came from the emissions certification and compliance department, the word "compliance" jumped off the page and made me think that the EPA might think that certain vehicles aren't maintaining their emission compliance.

I'm not signing up. The last thing I want is someone potentially making emissions "repairs" without my knowing what they're doing and why they're doing it! I'm lucky - I have a CRD that has been pretty bullet-proof for four years. I just have a bad feeling about someone messing with it.

Any one else have any ideas, conspiracy theories, thoughts about this?

Mine is a 2006, but they can't have it either.
Let them buy one off a dealers lot.

Yeah, who knows what "beneficial" software they will install to bring you into compliance.

Tell them they NEED to un-F37 the beast or they can't use it!!! Put the thing back to the way it was. It would probably pollute less too!

I would do it. I'd love to have a 250$ check and a new EGR valve and FCV. It would be interesting to see the Cat-less emissions numbers off of a dyno.

I once owned an 83 Bronco II and recieved the same letter over 20 years ago  But I only recieved a $50 US savings bond  I recieved a printout of the emmission levels when it was returned.

They're testing for emmission compliance  Also recieved a call when I owned my 99.5 jetta TDI. They wanted test cars between 75,000 and 100,000 miles, never been to Mexico and had the original catalic converters. Mine had over 100,000 miles so it didn't qualify

Your post reminded me - I'd had about one second of intrigue if they'd said I could get a printout of everything they'd done and all the test results while they had it. I still wouldn't do it though - like I said, I have a CRD that's been fairly reliable. It's had a couple issues, but none related to emissions luckily. I don't want to tempt fate!

They must be targeting the CRDs...I got one about 2 weeks ago too. Briefly thought about it but then wondered what was I supposed to do: Remove the ProVent, Take out the SEGR, put in the old fouled boost sensor, put back both the split CAC hoses (Sam: I guess I'll need that one back! ) etc etc etc. Better yet toss it in the shredder and realize that $250 isn't worth them monkeying around with her without my careful observation.

It was likely legit - Rousch has a large facility there Livonia and Chrysler does contract a great deal of work to them. They also downsized their internal emissions testing center during one of the recent rounds of cost cutting.

Got the same letter, But as other said.. for $250 its not worth not knowing whats going on. If I could be around during the test sure but I'm not giving someone my CRD to beat on.

I got one too. Tossed it. I could think of plenty of improvements Roush could do though...

Oh man I got one of those letters for my '06. Question is when? Might have been back in '07?
