Post subject:  New Air Intake Mod?

JP Magazine did a write up on the new mil-spec J8 being made in Cairo. It uses our 2.8 but the air intake is a different animal:

Wow, sure is. I just got the parts in to convert to a 3.7 intake. I'll have to settle for that.

Pretty sweet! It's got a snorkel of sorts built right into the hood. I'll bet that that big honking Sahara desert air filter ain't none to cheap to replace either. Of course it is rated for 100000 miles and can run 5 hours in a zero visibility sand storm.

I really like the way this thing looks, but it's hard to give up the comfort of the liberty... meh!

That is a cool military spec snorkel, but since we'll probably never have a hi-flow intake I'll stick w/ my 02 airbox mod and amsoil filter.

Compared to another J8 engine pic I had found from Diesel Power Mag I think? it does look a bit different: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/q_onPHw58RSJ6hw4EyUJCQ?feat=directlink
*Also looks like they moved the fuse box up against the firewall, brake fluid reservoir, the alternator mount looks different; and oil dipstick is on flip side, and is that the AC hose running across the top of the motor???

I wonder what type of fuel head/filter setup they have but haven't found a pic...
Think it has a lift pump??

Doubt it has a crankcase vent hidden behind all those hoses. But looks like it has a MAF sensor?!?!

That is exactly what I've been waiting for. I'll try to find out more about it.

The J8 uses the "new" engine that's currently found in the KA/KK/JK/RT. This engine uses a piezo injection system that is quieter, more precise, and offers better combustion characteristics as compared to the solenoid injectors on the KJ-era engine.

The fuel filter head looks identical to the KJ piece but without the hand primer.

It does have the crankcase vent system as all the other engines have.

Trans is the 545RFE, 4.10 gears limited slip front and rear, Dana 44 front Dana 60 front. It's a pretty unstoppable vehicle.

If it has the same filter head minus the primer, does that mean that they have wised up and put a LP in the tank?

Well, it's an entirely different injection system with a different high pressure pump, so you can take that for what you will.

Thanks MrMopar. By "high pressure pump" are you referring to a lift pump or the IP? Last time I checked, the same Bosch CP3 IP is used on all of the VM M RA 428's (the piezo injected one) and R 428's up through the 2009 production line.

Post subject:  Links are for different vehicles as well...

Some of pics were of the Jeep special vehicles "Sarge" concept that debuted in Moab this year (sensored word child of a J8, a JK, and toy army men) and some were of the actual Cairo-produced MilSpec J8, I'd expect some configuration details to have been "tweaked". The Sarge also has the interior from the JK, so I wouldn't be surprised if things had to be move to accommodate the AC or something.

I was referring to the injection pump.

The R428/R2816 (engine in the KJ) - this engine stopped being put into Chrysler vehicles as of the 2007 model year in the KJ and the RG. This had the Bosch CP3 with ZP18 gear driven lift pump.

The RA428 Panther engine - not yet seen stateside - has a newer version of the CP3+ pump without the gear drive pump (has electric pump instead).

Ah good. same old CP3 without the retarded gearroter supply pump. The current Chrysler voyager models still use the Gen II R428 (pre-panther engine) but I have not been able to ascertain whether they use the updated CP3 w/o the supply pump on the shaft.
