Post subject:  Strange noise after shutoff...

So something new just started with the libby and I won't have a chance to chase it down until tmw. Maybe someone here knows what this is:

I noticed a new noise coming from somewhere around the firewall. I can hear it from inside but it's louder outside. It sounds like and electric motor is going and it lasts about 20 seconds after I kill the engine.

Anyone know what this is before I go digging?

It could be the FCV trying to close the flapper. I heard of some jamming the gears. Best to have someone shut the engine off for you so you can listen close.

If it is a whining sound it is probably the FCV. This is a normal sound.

It either just started or became significantly louder yesterday...

its the FCV, dont worry about it, eventually it will finish stripping the gears and stop making noise. problem solved.

its an ancillary part of the CRD, kinda like the appendix of the human body, cept when this one fails you just leave it.

ya, you'll notice a little more shutdown "shudder"(you will feel the last fire kinda jerk the vehicle) but other than that nothing, its wont throw a CEL or anything

It sounds like the throttle to create vacuum to enable EGR. I thought it would throw a MIL, it does whenever I unplug it.

Typically it's pretty quiet then after about 20 seconds clicks as the valve slams open. There was a software update that opened it gradually to remove the click.

When unplugged yes, but when the valve just doesn't move, nope, no problem!

Bettery yet, just remove the butterfly. Then you know it won't be stuck halfway closed.

When mine went bad at 17k miles it started grinding real bad then got quiet, too quiet. As mentioned the engine shuddered when shutting of (a diesel thing  ) Finally I started getting error code 401 that wouold clear it's self every week or so. Then when the weather got cold it was every day or so. Finally I took it in and last week they replaced both the FCV and EGR valves :? It took over a day to do it. Seat of the pants dyno test is it runs better when the cel is not on. If you've got any warranty left have it replaced then you might want to remove the butterfly as mentioned :)

Definately stripped gears on the FCV...replaced one on a friends KJ couple of months ago and took the old one apart: main gear missing 4 teeth...

You can leave it or replace it. If the noise bothers you much you can pull the connector. It will throw a cel at ya then.

They make a squealing noise even when they work properly.
