Im getting an annoying clunk or pop in the steering wheel, it feels like it might be in the colum. This past summer I had the same type of noise but I could feel it more in the floor of the vehicle,it turned out to be a loose motor mount,tighten it up and problem solved. I know this is not the motor mounts because it definatly coming from something in the steering colum. Any Idea on what to look for?

I forgot to mention that sometimes when I get in the jeep and grab the wheel it does the pop, and when I check for play in the wheel or colum there is none!

I have done this operation on a lot of different cars and light trucks but not my CRD. I am assuming you have a tilt wheel. This is general information anyone who knows the specifics like bearing type and U joint type is welcome to add more info. 1) Remove all the plastic that covers up the bottom of the steering column so you can see what is going on. 2) Look for the U joint grab onto it and try to shake it up and down, then side to side. The U joint will be either a U joint like a drive shaft or a rubber disc. 3) The steering box acts as the lower bearing, another above the U joint ( this acts like the center bearing on some drive shafts), and one at the top of the steering shaft near the steering wheel. 4) Chances are that the bearing above the U joint is sloppy, it's mount is loose, or something is broken where it mounts to the steering column frame. This allows the steering shaft to wobble and make noise with out having any play. 5) It may be something simple like the problem VW Rabbits had where the inner bearing slid up the shaft and had to be pushed back in. 6) If every thing with the shaft is sound, check the steering column fame bolts and the steering box mounting bolts. Something is loose, there may be a TSB somewhere that address the issue. Once I had the suicide bolts come loose and had to pull them and replace them with socket head cap screws. Good luck. |
