OK, so my CRD goes out of warranty yesterday (I crossed 36,000 miles at about 6:30 pm) and - guess what! - I start it this morning to a lovely check engine light.

Running fine, trip computer is telling me I'm getting 28.2 mpg average, and no more black smoke than normal under hard acceleration. (It always gives me a little poof when it kicks down a gear to pass on the highway) It is due for an oil change, and I am going to change the fuel filter tomorrow. (36,000 and I'm not sure if it's ever been changed) Can anyone give me a clue? Can I get the code for the CEL without having to take it to the stealership that wanted $300+ to change the fuel filter assembly, rather than just the filter?

Can anyone tell me what size the allen bolt is for the oil pan? If you want it done right, sometimes you just have to do it yourself. . .

Most autoparts stores will let you use their OBDII reader for free. Harbor frieght sells one that works for about $30 bucks. Do a forum search for the exact model number.

$300.00 to change the fuel filter head unit that's crazy I have changed mine three times and the longest it ever took me was 25 minutes tops. Finally the last one came with a new plug / harness for the redesigned heater section. So far no leeks.

Thanks a bunch, bugnout. 'Preciate the info. I had already printed out the filter change thread in prep for the work tomorrow.

kccrd, where did you get a new head assembly? And why did you have to buy it? I am aware some models had issues with leaking and the heater plug burning out - I am going to take a look at the plug closely when I pull it out tomorrow - is that why you had to replace it so many times? Same issue every time?

If you need one - the new improved version is about $82 plus $12 for the connection - from Mopar parts
and the old one came with a new filter - I'm guessing the new ones do too.

Connector 68043086AA

I have not had to buy any of them they were all an even exchange and the last time the parts counter guy just gave it to me and said bring him the old part minus the filter. The problem has always been that the unit leaks at the plug for the heater connection. One time it actually started to burn and smoke so I drove all summer without the heater plugged in which did not hurt anything. I do think the engine runs better with the fuel heater operating properly just my opinion.[/quote]
