Excellent news. Now, before you re-install everything... Do you have a grinder? Use it to re-grind that center shaft JUST in the possibility that you ever need to grab it again with a socket. Then just hand-tighten the new pulley onto the shaft - The force of the belt will act to constantly tighten the pulley on there.

Lucky man. Get a lotto scratch off today.

Just trying to get ahead of the game should I need it. I don't yet know because I am waiting parts to get the engine running again.

I want to see if I can crack the pulley loose so I need to turn the Cresent wrench clockwise?
Image

If this works, I will probably weld a bar to the backside of the nut (instead of using the 17mm) to give it more 'teeth'.

NO!!!! Counter-clockwise. Just like removing any other NORMAL nut.

I like your design of tool tho, that is pretty smart. Wish I'd thought of it, but I ended up getting the whole alternator and pulley together.

That's why I asked :)

Just to be absolutely clear, Cresent is the 10mm. So, if the clutch locks in this direction, why can't you just turn the 10mm c.c.w with belt tension holding the rest? Or is this essentially the impact wrench idea.

...Good point of being absolutely certain. That is how I managed to shatter one socket (on the 10mm) and super-tighten that stupid shaft on my old unit.

You were correct originally, I was wrong. This is the rotation:

center shaft (10mm) wants to rotate clockwise, OR remain stationary.
17mm pulley wants to rotate counter-clockwise, as if it was any standard nut threaded onto a stationary bolt.

I really hate this design. Why couldn't they put a small hole in the casing and the windings so you could lock the stupid rotor in place? Would be MUCH better design for servicing.

Oh *facepalm* of course - It isn't designed for servicing b/c the designers haven't ever USED a wrench, so wouldn't be able to build a system FOR a wrench.

Ok, here is it.

Put into alternator and push down on both sides. Seems awfully tight but I didn't use any penetrating oil (or loosen the belt). I just wanted to see if it would budge for a later time.

Anyway, it didn't break free. I am not going to break it today.

Just wanted to chime in that I had to do the altenator pulley at 46K miles. My past experience is to see an alternator go between 100k and 200k... not pre 50k. Weak.

Just the pulley, or did you replace the whole alternator? I can't even think of another vehicle with a clutched alternator pulley, so I can't think of anything to compare it to as far as how long they should last.

The whole dealio... because... the pulley had been questionable for more than 10k miles (way too long) and I didn't know how suspect the alternator was at that point... and... I'd hate to only have a parts warranty on a pulley when the alternator bit it 8)

I bought the pulley, but in the process of taking everything apart jacked my alternator. Don't ask, it involved my father in law, who has patience issues and a big hammer. Ended up buying an alternator from Advance with a lifetime warranty. Now the pulley is sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

If the pully is that much of an issue for us, it might be WELL worth it getting a lifetime warranty from a parts store that is nearly nation wide like advanced, etc. That way if you are on the road and have another issue you do not have to pay out of pocket.

Yup. I got mine from Advance, took them 24 hours to bring it in WITH the right pulley already attached. $150, lifetime replacement warranty.

I have a BRAND-NEW pulley available too, for anyone who wants it. $50 shipped and its yours.
