Post subject:  gas in fuel tank!

Well,

I can tell this story here because it seems to have ended well.

2 weekends ago I was getting the Libby filled with a shot of dino juice. My 20-something niece was with me and the local Sunoco was busy. (snow coming) I was ragging on the station owner to her about how slow/incompetent he was.... I always take my diesel can with me because I mix some #2 with my bio-d outside the tank before I put it in the Jeep.

Now, its our turn at the pump. The owner knows me as the "veggie man". I jump out and before I pull the can from the back, he has the nozzle in the tank - pumping away. I reach down to take the cap off my can, when my niece yells, " Hey uncle, isn't that gas he's putting in there!"
I look up and sure enough, there's the RUG nozzle pumpin' away! "STOP" I yell - too late, over 6 gallons of RUG in my tank. I calculate quickly, tank has about 4 gallons left, 6 gallons of rug... mix too high. I tell him to fill it with #2... right to the top!. He puts in another 10+ gallons of #2. So, ~14 gallons of #2 to 6 gallons rug.... Do I have him just drain it? Now remember, I don't trust this guy to pump fuel much less turn wrenches on my car. I decide to "ease" her home and siphon as much off as I can.

Ya know, those anti-siphon devices really work!

I take the gasser to the parts store and buy some cetane boost. I mix 16oz in the tank and drive her.

Over the course of the next week, every time the fuel gauge gets off full, I fill her back up with #2. I hold off using any bio-d incase I have to have her towed to the stealership.

She ran like crap for the rest of the weekend and slowly got better as the % of rug went down. Now she's back to normal.

~30% rug is more than I would want to run.... but, with snow falling, being on call for work, stealership closed on Sat. night..... I rolled the dice. Maybe, just maybe I dodged a bullet. Only long term time will tell.

What I should have done was make the guy push the Jeep into his empty heated bay and drain the tank and fill her with fresh #2 without starting

Two quick and dirty ways to drain down the tank on your own I can think of -

Dissconnect the fuel return line at the quick connect forward of the tank, slide a length of 5/16" ID fuel hose over the metal line and put the other end in a sutitable container. Then start the engine and let it idle - fuel system will do it's thing and all the return fuel from the engine will empty into the container.

OR -

Disconnect the fuel supply line at the quick connect forward of the tank. Either plug in a spare matching male metal line (available at auto parts stores as fuel line repair kits) with an appropriate size piece of hose attached, or use a piece of hose large enough to slide completely over the quick connect coupling provided you can get an adequate seal around it. Then suck/siphon into an appropriate container.

3rd option for those with lift pumps -

Disconnect the fuel supply line at a convenient place downstream of the lift pump, attach a length of hose and route to an appropriate container. Then key on and let the lift pump do it's thing.

I guess that's God's way of tellin' ya to "pay attention." It is way to early to tell what damage might have been done to the injection pump and injectors (we'll keep our fingers crossed for ya), but you are right: the anti-theft device in the filler neck really does work.

That's probably why at the peak of gas prices thieves were just shoving a bucket under the tank and punching a hole in it all across this great land.

Anyway, this is a good argument for having a MityVac. You just hook it up to the fuel inlet line from tank at the fuel filter and start sucking. Takes a few minutes and you can drain the whole tank. Works like a charm.

I did the same about a month ago, 7 gals of RUG about 33% mix. Topped off every 60 to 80 miles with #2, was getting about 10 mpg.

I was on a 16 hour trip so was able to go through the mix fast enough that I was back to smooth running tractor by the end of the trip. Don't really want to do that again, I've started carrying an empty fuel can with me.
