Post subject:  International Buys Jeep

Jeep Magazine is reporting in its April issue that International is going to the Jeep brand. All Jeeps will have diesel options (Mercedes 3.0) as well as Rubicon options. Liberties and Grands will go back to solid axles. The Liberty name is going to be dropped for the Cherokee badge worldwide. The Wrangler is going to get a Hemi option as well as a 4.5L Navistar/Allison transmission option. See the April issue of Jeep Magazine page 62 for any questions.

If this actually happens I see a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with the 4.5 in my future!

Would that be the April first edition  Do you have any links? One problem I see is I don't even know where my local IH dealer is?? And last I heard they're called Navistar

There's nothing on the Jeep site or the Navistar site. This is why I posted, to see if anyone else had heard anything. I agree that it sounds too good to be true.

....I still feel the quality will be good and any issues will be supplier issues or snafoos. Not the intentional Bean Counter Engineering issues like the lack of a lift pump and second rate front ball joints.

They are very proud of their parts :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I did a google search on "International Harvester buys Jeep" and all roads lead back to that magazine article. Most threads are treating it like a April Fools joke  Also the article does not mention Fiat who now has a 35% stake in Chrysler LLC.

Is that Jeep owners Magazine that is supposed to be mailed to each of us?? I only got a few copies since I had mine new. Since it right from Jeep, maybe it's true.

AND with every Navistar/IH Jeep sold, there will be an, authentic Fidel Castro autographed box of Cuban cigars on the front seat.
Now remember...they ARE gently rolled on the thighs of lovely tropical maidens........

I like it all except the solid axles. Can not imagine going backwards. My grand with the IFS and QDII had the best of both worlds.

I'm with ya there. I recall when Nissan tried to save a few bucks and go back to the solid rear on the Maxima. They didn't get favorable reviews.

I think you have to build a vehicle for the largest demographic you're going after, and for the Liberty, that demographic is comprised mostly of people who will never take the vehicle off road.

A plush ride, nicely done interior, and good fuel mileage will garner more sales than any true off road ability.

Litton,
With all due respect....Open your eyes fella.
The highway system is crumbling, our society is not creating wealth any more and my stimulus check is in the mail.
The only way to get around shortly will be off road ready. If and that is a big If you can find fuel.

Post subject:  Navistar MaxxForce 5 (4.5L) will need to....

....abandon HEUI and go to Generation 3 common rail to even have a shot at putting the 4.5L into a Jeep. At the present it is certified for class 4 trucks 14,001-16,000 GVW. Ford back in the better days had a dream of putting this engine in the F-150 but jumped ship and left Navistar hanging.
Hang a 6 Speed manual or an Allison behind the MaxxForce 5 in a JK, it would be very sweet.

As far as Solid Axle Vs Independent Suspension goes, I have driven both with very good handling and both with lousy handling.
Unlike 30 years ago, good handling is not rocket science, just good engineering.

I was considering an Explorer until Ford dumped the 4.5L Diesel option. Even though I have a brother working for Ford, Ford shot them self in the foot with a 50 Cal belt fed anti-aircraft weapon until the barrel got red hot and drooped by dropping the 4.5L diesel option before it went into production.

It was not Ford but EPA.
The govinmint changed the rules after Ford put up hundreds of millions of $$$$$$.
The Govinmint is here to help you...the stimulus check is in the mail......we are doing this for the poor...

I saw that Mahindra is part of Navistar. Maybe that is how the goofy rumor got started (Mahindra making Jeep type vehicle in India, etc).

I wonder if the alleged Mahindra truck sale in the US will be under the International/Navistar name.

Reminds me of a poster I saw back in the 90's with a Government agent dressed in a black full body armor with an automatic weapon with a statement, I am from the Government and I am here to help you.

My brother the, Ford Fuel Systems Engineer has told me that the Ford big shots don't like diesels (even though they sell the hell out of Power Strokes).

I work with environmental equipment, and it is a good thing it is with crap, so most of them want it out of sight out of mind. Some of the regulations are never disputed and make total sense. Others are obscure and must have been dreamed up by some one on a bad LSD "ACID" TRIP.
In the Bosch Book Diesel-Engine Management, they back up the good logical part of the regulations with sound scientific evidence, such as more efficient engines produce less CO2. Regulations that are not logical are referred to a Legislation. Since Bosch is in business to make money, they will sell any component that will help the engine manufactures comply with the "Legislation".

I don't believe you have any idea of just how off road capable the WK truely is with the IFS. They are truely awesome. Granted, for those that like to do major suspension mods the IFS is inhibiting but all they really need is a bit more ground clearance.

Sure you can wheel IFS,done it for 6 years in my KJ but now I'm at the limit what can be done with the IFS without spending major $$$ and I'm talking over $40,000 so bye,bye IFS and hello SFA.I'll be more capable and be able to lock/gear my KJ correctly and will not have to ever worry about a alloy diff going boom again.IFS is not the future unless you are a mall crawler,SFA is the way to go for offroad.

I don't know about SFA and ground clearance, unless you are talking about portal axles like H1, Unimog, Pinz (a portal swing axle :D )
