Post subject:  Removing oil filter without painting the floor black...
I did my first oil change with the Fumoto valve tonight. Man, what a breeze! The way the Fumoto drain points straight down, the oil drizzles straight down into the catch container right to the very last drop.

The oil filter is another matter. I never seem to get that thing off without making an awful mess. I forgot how nasty diesel engine oil is... "We've replaced his engine oil with black ink. Let's see if he notices..."

Next time I am thinking of punching a hole in the filter and letting it drain out that way for awhile before actually removing the filter. Does anyone have any tricks for doing this cleanly? Lots of newspaper, perhaps?

I make a little "oil slide" out of a piece of cardboard. Works awesome. No oil on the skid at all.

I just put the drain pan under the filter, spin it off, and sit in on top of the drain pan.

Get a drain pan with an oil filter drain on it and it's an easier task.

I use a plastic coke bottle. After you drank the Coca Cola you cut the bottle in halve and slide that over the filter. Since it's a plastic bottle you can still grab the oil filter.

Now if you spin the filter a few turns the oil will run into the bottle. No oil on your hands and no oil on the floor.

Like TDI4BY-but I go to the wife's kitchen and get some aluminum foil and make a "boat" and that keeps that nice black used oil to not get on the trans skid and help keeps things clean!

You can also slip a baggie (or used plastic shopping bag) over the filter. You then loosen the filter with the bag over it and deposit the mess to the drain pan.

Punch a hole it it and after a few minutes loose the filter so it can get some air. It will drain very nicely without a mess.

Yeah, take a screwdriver or something and punch a hole near the bottom end and then another near the top. Walk away for a minute.

i like the soda bottle idea..and not just for the jeep. My bus has 2 oil filters that make a mess when changing..

I tried holes. sort of worked..

this is just in time too..my wife's jeep needs an oil change.

I put an old refrigerator wire rack over the pan and put the filter on that. Its the redneck thing to do. :lol:
