Post subject:  Exhaust upgrades

I cant find the thread that I know is in here some where about which exhaust /muffler option is the way to go for the CRD. I remember some just saying strait pipe and other saying muffler. Pros/Cons anybody?

Best bet would be to use the search function and cruise through all the posts referring to exhaust mods. I went through there the other day and there have been lots of discussions concerning mods to CRD exhaust. Based on what I read, straight piping seems to have produced the best results in performance and economy. I am excited about the gains in MPG since the kitty guts went bye bye last weekend. Early results from the EVIC show 3 MPG gains. I saw 32 MPG the other day at 55 MPH and it read 28 MPG this morning after my 15 mile commute at 70 MPH. Cant wait to straight pipe to see what additional gains I have. Another benefit is the increased coast after letting off the throttle; no more exhaust brake :)
Just talked to a local muffler shop and said $40.00 should do it for cutting out the muffler and welding in a 35" piece of 2.5 inch tubing. Thought about putting a Cherry Bomb glass pack in there but DarbyWalters indicated MPG loss so he staight-piped as well.

Ok please expand on gutting the cat. Is there a thread I missed about that? And isn't that bad when you have to get emissions tested?

What I found that worked best was a long piece of 3/4 " pipe. You can hammer the pipe into the guts and twist side to side to help break up into pieces. Once you have the center hollowed out pretty good and pieces removed, take a hammer and bang around on the outside surfaces to debond all remaining pieces. When you think you have it all out, take it out for a short run to blow remaining pieces out. I had to do this several times and continue to break up larger pieces that wouldn't come out. Some people leave the outer pieces inside but I didn't want to risk them coming loose and clogging the pipe. Hope this helped. If you don't have the pipe, anything long, skinny, and rigid should work.
Where I'm at, there are no requirements for diesel emmisions testing yet. See earlier post about exhaust smell. Performing above mod for off-roading purposes also provides a real diesel exhaust smell rather than that eye-stinging chemical smell.
