Post subject:  Increased Oil Consumption in winter?

Is it normal to see increased oil consumption in winter? I bought my CRD in mid summer and I would check the oil level often to make sure it wasn't using any and it wasn't. Now that its winter I changed the oil to the Rotella T full syn 15w40 and I have noticed a very slow oil usage. I Just checked it and it was under the min on the dipstick. I am due for my next oil change soon (has only been about 6k miles on the oil) and I think I'm going to go with the Mobil1 0w40 for the next change and see if that will fix the problem.

not that Austin winters are very hard - but 67,000 miles - no oil usage, None. (Mobil 1 0-40W)

.... oil may be hanging up in the engine instead of running back into the pan. I run into this a lot with gear boxes that have sight glasses for checking oil level.

I ran through a quart of oil in less than 3000 miles last month...and it scared the peehonky out of me. I mentioned it to GMCTD and he suggested it might be a dirty or wet air filter. We had a lot of rain and I drove about 6000 miles in some pretty good downpours.

I changed the air filter and have not experienced any oil loss in the last 1500 miles. I hope that was it, and I'm on the hunt for a gasser airbox to prevent futher scares.

Dirty air filter or wet air filter or filter meda that has been wet (media shrinkage decreases open area amongst interstices, does not return to oem specs after drying) causes turbo to pull more oil outta the CCV - increased rolling resistance in winter climes causes heavier crankshaft loading, which causes more blowby vapors - additionally, increased effective cold viscosity causes more rotational resistance, even 15W over 0W - #1 Diesel has less
BTU content, making engine work harder from idle up thru operating ranges

FYI - only the lower part of the V6 airbox and it's snorkel is required - the neat JEEP cover is not useable, and most of the covers I've seen in boneyards are broken, anyway - the CRD cover has provision for the MAF module and the Baro pressure\temp sensor that the JEEP cover does not have

Hmmm, that's food for thought. I had been running a NAPA air filter to save the Amsoil for long trips. For the recent grand tour, I put the Amsoil back in, and ran with the grille blockers installed. I also changed back to Rotella 5W40, after using Rotella 10W30 for several hundred miles for local winter driving.

Well over 3000 miles in a week and a half, according to the dipstick it didn't use any oil. Interesting.

I put Mobile 1 0w40 synthetic in my snowblower (converted riding mower) this winter because, well, I'd be using the little Briggs in the cold. You would be surprised just how thick even synthetic is when it's 10 degrees F outside. I don't think we notice quite as much on our little dipsticks from the Jeeps, but on that big wide dipstick from the rider's engine, it looks like thickened syrup.

I'm working on some stuff work that we're thinking could be silicone based lubricants. I'll be collecting some viscosity versus temperature data for these materials. Just for fun, I was going to collect data on the Mobile 1 0w40 and Shell 5w40 synthetic and see how that changed over a range of temperatures too. I'll post the results when I get them in the future.
