Have a 3.7L 4x4. Been considering a diesel conversion in the future. I know all about the CRD, but what about other options, like the International 2.8's that have been swapped into almost everything (see link below) including Jeeps. Haven't heard of a Liberty swap. These engines can use stand alone management hard and software, so it seems like the possibilities are limitless. They aren't too huge, so should fit into the Liberty. Should be superior in strength and reliability to the CRD, especially given the EGR problems that killed the CRD. My idea is to completely tear out the 3.7L and all computer hardware and wiring and go to a diesel like this along with a new tranny, transfer case, etc., and its own computer hardware and wiring as required someday. Won't have to worry about compatibility with the factory set up then. Will also be doing a SFA conversion by then. I figure that with all the extra weight that the 4x4 mods are adding, the 3.7L will be sucking wind and gas, so when it wears out, the truck diesel should take care of this deficit and then some.

Any ideas?

Engine swaps are a lot of work - especially getting the computers to still work right afterwards.
also - the EGR's have not 'killed the CRD' - they are an irritant - but they can be dealth with.

if you want a long term project - try the swap
if you want something to drive - trade the 3.7 on a CRD.

The good news is that engine is easy to operate sans electronics. If I recall, internation in brazil bought the rights from ford to the rover 300tdi engine design, then increased the displacement a little and beefed up some of the problems with the 300tdi. As swaps go, that one is probably a great model to use, but isn't it rather expensive?

I have a CRD, all the wiring, and computers for a swap. Let me know if you are interested.

New seals, new gaskets, new timing belt, completely gone through, 100% ready to drop in and fire up.
$2500

Doesn't seem practical or efficient, having the intake and exhaust on the same side of the head, particularly wrt the close proximity to all that radiated heat, which is way even greater when the turbo is singing it's siren song - the turbo appears to be directly adjacent the ac compressor, and is directly above the starter motor - far be it from me to be an old stick-in-the-mud, but I get really bad vibes from that whole setup
