Post subject:  Suncoast and Pump Replacement ?????????

I think that I am going to replaced the Pump and TC myself.
Some ???? that I have are:
Is it hard for the pump to come out while you are holding the main shaft.
The Panflect that came with the Pump said --The main sump filter connect directly in to the pump, so the oil pan and filter must be removed before pump removal.-- I was going to removed the tranny, replaced the pump and TC, put it all back and them remove the pan and replace the filter. Am I right? or what.
What do you think GMCTD.

Post subject:  Pump has pry tabs to get your hook under

nescosmo: The pump has little tabs under it so you can put your pry hook under them and gently pop the pump off the transmission case. You can see them in the pictures http://img296.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0005se4.jpg

Looks like the Bean Counters were out to lunch on this one.

Good luck,

My bad, Nes - I completely overlooked this post - yes, the pan and filter can be done last - and you will have to drop the pan at the beginning to eliminate all the transmission fluid.

Compare your oem pump with the new pump - if they're identical, no need to replace the oem version unless your KJ is high mileage - there are pics of the old and new versions in my Haystack thread in CRD TECH section in the Suncoast section

Best of luck with it all.................

Actually the main transmission filter (the flat one) plugs into the pump inlet. Therefore the filter must be removed before the pump can be pulled.

New pump comes with new steel front cover w/integral T/C seal. Old style had aluminum cover with seal on the pump.

Be sure to hold in on the input shaft when removing the pump to prevent xmission innards from coming out with the pump. Be sure filter seal is well seated in pump inlet before replacing the filter.

the front pump has been upgraded?
I don't like finding out after I tear down.

So what I am going to do is drain the oil by pulling the pan off then take both filters off , put the pan back in and go with the job of takeing the tranny off. ounce I have the tranny off take off the fluid pump, install the new one and so worth..
Is that what I should do?

If the Lib is up on jackstands (or ramps) there is enough room to drop the xmission (with xfer case and crossmember), remove the T/C, then support the assembly front and rear and drop the pan and pull the filters, change the pump, install new filters, replace pan, install new T/C and reassemble.

I use a motorcycle jack (nice aluminum one on sale at Sears right now) to drop the xmission.

It is a LOT less messy to vacuum out the xmission oil thru the dipstick tube before dropping the pan.

The dipstick tube grommet MUST be placed in the hole first (NOT put on the tube), then the tube drops in the grommet as the xmission rises into place.

Today the TC was deliver and it look great I went and order a pan from PML it will be deliver by the 26th.
I call today to see how much will be to rent a tranny jack and they told me $35 a day and no more than 170 for the month; I went to harbor and they had a tranny jack for $79.00 on sale, I bought it, very small and handy it hold 450#. I can always use it for the tank and what ever, it does not use that much space in the garage. Will be in touch.

I am dropping the tranny next week; Do you need any support on the engine the way the engine looks I do not think so but I don't know.
Also I see that the tranny cover can not be reach from the top to take the bolts, can they be reach from the bottom and how many are there, do you have to reach all the way to the top.
Another concern that I have is that the TC do not have a fluid plug to empty the TC, I know that you can not run the TC dry. how do I put fluid on the TC before I run it.

You can support the engine with a block of wood between the cross member and the oil pan.

Upper transmission/engine bolts can be reached from below with long extension and swivel. It helps though to remove the coolant reservoir and heat shields to access the upper bolts on the left side and the exhaust clamp.

You can pour a little ATF+4 into the T/C before installing but it will still be "wet" from testing and will fill fast anyway when it first runs. The important thing is the the seal must not be run dry. Coat with ATF+4 before assembly!

Post subject:  Trasmission is done

I do thank GMCTD and STP2136 and others for their advice and help, Specially GMCTD without you it could not be done.
I want to said that the CRD run very nice and the TC is tight is not as noisy as before and it shift much better. If somebody want the CRD change go Sun coast.
The only thing that I could not do was to install that F@!@#$# bolt way up in the pasenger side of the CRD. the rest was hard but challenge specially with a 53 years old wife.-- no body want to help me , no body--, but well we had a good time, heating chiken wings and sip good wine.
One thing that I had to replace was the speed sensor was $30.00. I am so happy that I did this. Well I think that I have a tranny for a long time.

Suncoast TC
TrasGo kit
Fluid Pump
New atf#4 oil
New Speed sensor(input)
InMotion.
I am set for life.

Does anybody have a parts list for all of the filters/gaskets/pump assembly stuff needed to drop the tranny and replace the pump and converter? I'm short on time and money and can't afford a rental car if the job takes longer than a 3 day weekend. I'd hate to not finish the job because I didn't know about a particuular filter or gasket for the CRD tranny.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any references to affordable online vendors of parts for the CRD would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
