Sorry if this has been disscussed (though I did nbot readily see it...)
Question: I have an '06 CRD and for the fist year no issues at all. Then in the last year it has started to "eat" the left serpentine belt tension pulley - the spring loaded one. It starts after about 300 miles of replacement. It starts as a rattle and then escalates itno a squelaing chirp over time until it just has to be replaced. It is far more noticeable in reverse than in drive, and almost non noticeable in neutral/park.
The dealer has replaced it 9 times now over the last year and change. The first one or 2 were attributed to "a bad batch of pulleys).. .but this excuse can no longer works. THey have tried various styule belts and "called the factory with trouble tickets" Clearly the dealer has no clue.. and of course stands behind the: "we don't know diesels" excuse (becasue I am in California and this car should technically not be here) ANyway.... anyone else with a tension pulley appetite that is hard to sustain??? Thanks!!

Howdy DigiBit - Welcome to LOST

I haven't had any problems with pulley's - however 9 replacements in a year - sounds like the mounting isn't straight.
the pulley's angled with respect to the belt, so the force isn't straight on the bearing.

can you see if there's any movement in the mount? does it wobble?

The type of bearings used in the tensioner pulley are designed to take load without taking any thrust caused by misalignment.
Another item to check is the pulley on the alternator. It should drive the alternator in the forward direction and free wheel in the other. If it does not work properly it will cause a lot of problems in the belt train. Pop the dust plug and see if you can turn the alternator in one direction with out moving the belt.

I'm on my third belt tensioner.
STILL SQUEELING!!!Dang-it
Seems they're good for a few weeks after replacement, then comes the famous squeel.
I have about 100 miles left on warranty and am wondering if I should bring it in or just say funk it. :?

Have you tried rubbing a candle on the under side of the serpentine belt while it is running to see if that gets rid of the noise.
