And, Obama's goal is to get 1 million plug-in hybrids on the road by 2015. Due to vehicles not selling, it appears that several new 2010 diesel vehicles are being shelved. In addition to low sales, some diesel enthusiasts are saying that the big push for plug-in hybrids are requiring auto manufacturers to abandon diesel platforms.

From what I'm hearing, add a zero to those numbers and you'll be closer to the final tally - the 12 to 14 cents is only what they're actually calling a "fuel tax" - once you include all the hidden items that are a fuel tax in everything but name, included in all this so-called legislation they're ramming thru at warp speed, the actual numbers will be much higher.

And regarding "change" - after approving tens of billions in subsidies and tax credits for the wind power industry, it turns out a certain Speaker of the House and her family are heavily invested in a certain wind power company that's owned by a certain Texas oil tycoon.

Post subject:  Tax Diesels Wait until the CAP tax.....

......sends the price of electricity through the roof.

The plug ins like the Chevy Volt will get it too. Then they will have a separate meter to charge them even more Taxes!

If you think we will see any advancement in alternative energy, it won't be directly inspired by the Saul Alinsky Kool Aid drinking idiots in charge.

Since they have no real working plan, all they know how to do is demonize their opponents.

Our Diesels are an opponent of Gasoline Hybrids and Plug Inns,so guess what we are in for.

Taxes and more taxes :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

As far as I am concerned THEE ONE Carbon emitting source that needs to be shut down is Washington DC. This includes the Whitehouse, Congress, and Washington Press Corps :!: :!: :!:

They together emit more Carbon in the form of HOT CO2 than all of the Coal, Oil, and Biomass in the world is capable of doing :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Now I will write my Congressman :!: :!: :!:

I think that all of the politicians are corrupt and drunk with power. As for change, that is all we will have after they get all of our money. Why work if we will have everything given to us?

The thread title is inaccurate. A study panel has recommended the tax raise. Congress makes recommendations in the form of resolutions.

$.10 - $.15 tax increase to fund infrastructure and alternative energy is peanuts compared to the $2.00+ increase that went into the pockets of the oil companies and Wall Street speculators.

Europeans are paying 6-7 times the fuel taxes that US consumers pay.

Wow, a study panel thinks raising taxes during a recession is a good idea. Go for it. Do all you can during the next four years. Hopefully Americans might be ready for another CHANGE at that time.

Everybody just hates those big bad oil companies, and thinks it would be great to penalize them by taking all their profits. Step back, calm down and think about what really happens.

Without investment in exploration, drilling and refining supply will DROP. A lot of those PROFITS are used to find new sources of oil. When the economy does turn around and demand increases, but supply decreases, what will happen? Answer: $4.00+ gasoline.

So we should too, right?

I think not.

You guys are used to too cheap fuel, look at the monsters you drive around.

I think a little european-ness isn't a bad thing. You do need to get off the fossil fuel (as do the rest of the world) the supply is going to end within our lifetime, so either we pay a bit now, start the changeover, or we go bankrupt when we've depleted our ressources.

The known oil supplies exceed the oxygen supply, but.

As we all know Politicians love crisis so they can do a power grab.
Lies, spin, and exaggeration are considered tools of the trade.
Suppressing the masses to give them the perception of power is a quick way to grab power with out having to plan and work on a solution.
Taxing beyond what is needed to run a minimal government does not solve any problems only exacerbate them.
Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians have all seen the light and are working on solutions. Cooking up some new tax (like a Carbon tax) created by some Wack Job who has injected too many mind altering substance, will only divert resources from the solutions needed.
To blow the argument of Funding Government Research through Taxation into the nearest Black Hole a few light years away, too much of the money gets diverted to little pet projects like protecting a wild mouse or studying the spoiled beer preferences of Roaches.
To be blunt, I trust Bosch, Siemens, or Johnny Gear Head much more on their dime than some Government Funded Idiot sucking up our tax dollars, euros, chronars, yen, or pounds; who turns around to only ask for more.
When Bosch, Siemens, or Johnny Gear Head comes up with a fusion drive engine that has torque, reasonably priced, and is cheap to run; the world will beat a path to his door. No matter how much spoiled beer you feed to Roaches, you will never come up with a solution. If you tax too much, the Bean Counters will look for ways to get out of paying the tax, for the Carbon tax, they will ship the work where they will not have to pay the tax. If this happens, don't be surprised if your engine block is cast in Africa, machined in Guatemala, and assembled in Mexico, and slapped into the body in the US, just to get out of paying taxes.

If we can figure this out, don't you think the big shots in charge can :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

While I agree that alternative fuels are a good path to follow, I am a big believer in the free market.

If oil was in as short supply as the politicians say it is, then we'd see prices skyrocketing.

Until it is profitable for a company to develop, test, and market an alternative fuel, it's not going to happen.

Artificially raising prices through taxes in an attempt to dictate the market is bovine scatology.

...wow....

You'd think they announced a tripling of all of the federal income tax rates based on the angst in this thread.

No one enjoys paying more taxes on anything, but the 12 to 15 cents is pretty modest. As already pointed out, we could have it a lot worse as in what Europeans have to pay in fuel taxes. I think if they're going to assess more taxes, they should do it on all motor fuels rather than just pick on diesel. Outside of tractor trailers, there are a relatively small number of passenger diesels on the road.

As far as the argument concerning the amount of oil supplies, I've heard all kinds of things about this that are all over the board. The important distinction made is "the easily recoverable oil supplies will be exhausted in our lifetime." I suspect that very few politicians are smart enough to know how much oil is left. They get their information from various scientists and engineers who don't necessarily agree amongst themselves.

While some academic research is industrially sponsored, most comes from the form of grants from the government from the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy which comes from taxes. While the NSF and DOE are picky about what they will fund, they don't police the results. With industrial sponsored projects, there is, in some cases, some amount of pressure to have results that "appease" them so that a researcher can continue to receive funding.

Free market...it's a fine thing...but it didn't prevent the financial meltdown. One could argue that the "free market" is controlled by those with enough money to influence it and those of us with normal means for living just have to take it. While I'm not a fan of government intervention, it's the only institution with the ability to reign in money-laden power brokers.

I'm not so sure it's about "dictating a market." Whether prices are higher due to taxes or due to market driven reason, it still alters behavior. We adjust by using less of whatever it is or finding an alternative means. For example, at my corporate cafeteria, an order of chicken fingers, fries, and a soda will set you back $8.00. They reason that they should charge more for "unhealthy" foods as a way to get us to "eat better." The net result: we eat there less, bring our lunch, or go out and get the same food for half the price elsewhere.

Post subject:  Extra Diesel fuel tax is another tax to be squandered away..

... on a pet some Politicians project. If we are super lucky it may go toward road or bridge repair. If you want a representation of where the Extra Diesel Fuel Tax will go look at the big earmark infested so called stimulus package.

Infrastructure improvements benefit all of us and other than Law Enforcement, Firefighting, and Military, it is one of the few things Government can oversee better than the private sector. Based upon growth and need Government determines where a road, bridge, prison, ect, needs to be built or repaired and a Contractor does the work.

Taxing us with a tax to do Social Engineering is stupid and waste full. Europeans have paid higher fuel taxes for many years and when you do not need to drive the distances Americans and Canadians do, it is not a big deal. With all due respect comparing North America to Europe is not comparing apples to apples.

One grave error caused by the Euro-Social Engineering by taxation is the shrinking of the family size below the population replacement rate. With the unfilled jobs, foreign workers have moved in and filed the jobs and now they are whining about the loss of their culture because the influx of immigrants was too fast for them to assimilate.

I do not want to give up my Freedom or my Liberty (my KJ either) because some Idealist Utopian pot smoke pipe dreams created by inflicting another tax.

Uproar about a tax to fix the roads and bridges that are falling apart now that we are the world's biggest debtor nation. Not a peep about the trillions gone down the neocon rathole of Iraq. Our grandchildren will still be paying that tax.
