Hi Folks

Why are Jeep worldwide i guess and correct me if i'm wrong, notorius for charging exhorbitantly for their spare parts through their dealer networks.

Are the parts genuinely that good and manufactured solely for Jeep to enable them to demand or rather command the selling price as they currently do.

Yes, pirate parts are available for all manufacturers and that decision to use or not to use them rests solely with the owner of the vehicle and if the vehicle is in or out of its warranty etc.

What really pees me off the most as a Jeep owner is that people you speak to about Jeep and who know something about motor cars instantaneously respond in the negative. This mindset has tarnished the image of Jeep, impacted on their new vehicle sales and pissed off a lot of Jeep owners with their pathetic resale value.

I noticed a broken flicker assembly on my CRD yesterday and the first thing that came to mind was Oh my God, how much will this part cost to replace now from the dealer, sure try a scrap yard but these Jeeps don't just lie around scrap yards in South Africa and even if you do find one that was dismantled for spares, you get charged like wounded Buffalo anyway :roll:

Jeep parts are cheap here.

Like I said before, I get 25% off msrp(us msrp seems to be about half of new price overseas), so if you need anything shippable talk to me and I can check pricing.

Funny thing is mercedes parts are not cheap here......funny how that works eh?

Same with Dodge for Cummins parts, usually at least 1/3rd to 1/2alf higher thru Mr MoParts

Mackruss, do you mean the front indicator light? They wanted 159€ overhere for one of those for my '02...US $203...

Yeah it sucks but I am under the impression that all car parts (from any dealer) are expensive nowadays. Example:

Try buying an original rear silencer for an Opel (AKA:Vauxhal/Holden/Chevrolet) Vectra V6...US $ 663!!!! Rediculous since they are made in Spain and Germany.

I buy most of my JEEP stuff in the USA.
Shipping is high but in the end its still cheaper then buying local.

Our biggest problem is that there are NO aftermarket parts outside the US..so we are doomed to buy at the dealer.

Then someone like Sam goes in and he gets 25% or more off :cry:

NAPA is the same. A person off the street pays through the nose but shops pay half that

That's why I pass by napa on my way to AdvancedAutoParts

When I was in the Auto Repair Business years ago, I got many passionate complaints about parts prices on mostly Japanese cars and trucks.
Being in a College Town and not wanting to give an apology for the manufacturer every time. I kept the eye shield out of my sand blasters mask that was very pitted and looked like it was dirty with an illegal white powder (cocaine).
Next I took a very dull razor blade from my gasket scraper.
I taped the Razor blade and a used tubular coffee stirrer onto the back of the frosted glass eye shield (Looked just like a Cocaine users kit). :lol:

When the customer started complaining, I would pull out the contraption and show it and tell the customer, "Now you know where they come up with their prices".

For many manufacturers, parts are a way to make up for other losses. With countless Government regulations and self imposed requirements such as ISO 9000, 9001, 9002, ect there are people on the pay roll who don't bring in the bacon. New sales are very competitive and some manufactures will cut their prices on new stuff up front and recover it when they sell parts.

Ways to save money are to buy name brand parts from other sources. Chrysler buys Ball Joints they can't afford the equipment to make their own. Moog makes great ball joints some even exceed the Chrysler specifications. Gee Wizz Why not just buy Moog?

When it comes to crash parts, there are some aftermarket parts that are cheaper, some work and fit, others are about as bad as pounding out your own with a hammer on a tree stump and finishing them off with the $199.00 Harbor Freight English Wheel.

Sir Sam could expand this if he wants to

Napa is no more expensive then any other parts stores,better parts also and much better warranty that they actually honor.You think the prices at advance auto is cheaper you should see the real price of there cheap parts that shops pay :shock:

,cheap,cheap parts that are not worth a darn.We only use advance if really needed since they are about 100' up the road.Those $30 set of crap pads at advance only cost us $5 and never last.I only use Napa or CarQuest and always get good prices for better parts.

When I had a 300SDL I thought non-dealer Mercedes parts were quite reasonable. I wondered how they could even ship Balo brakes rotors to the states for the low selling price. There's a very competitive aftermarket including electronic modules. I dreaded having to go to the local dealer, but there are a few dealers that sell discounted parts.

Henry Ford supposedly said that if he could get every person that owned a Model T to buy all the repair parts they'd ever need from him, that he could afford to give the cars away new.

I just dodged one new parts bill on the replacement '87 MB. New radiator would have been $250. But a local radiator repair/A/C shop that my father's previous employer used for repairs to their heavy equipment, said they could easily repair the damaged tubes on the radiator from the wrecked '87 - estimated cost $65.

I could also sell you a used OEM for $18.

Certifit part vs OEM part would be virtually indistinguishable.

They love overcharging at dealers, or wherever OEM parts come from.

I wanted to replace my front Axel/spindle nuts (when i did bearings) and Dealers wanted for the 2 nuts, $70 bucks ! (roamed thru all the local auto parts and at everyplace were special order)

Needless to say, i re-used the old ones.

They just love to rip you off

, clearly the parts can be manufactured by other companies, half the price and still manage to stay in business.

Sadly, a lot of the aftermarket parts are as good or better than OEM.

That's her, i don't mind the non oem part at all, i'll go on what you say.

I need a hood and those prices aren't so bad, can't imagine what a hood shipped to SA would look like when it arrives, probably worse than the dinged one :roll:

Only some are,most are cheaply made and do not last or don't fit or work from the get go.Been turning wrenches for over 20 years and will never buy parts from Advance Auto/Auto Zone/Checkers since there parts are sub standard quality.Napa and CarQuest is where I mostly go but I do prefer OEM parts for some parts where no aftermarket parts are good or not available.

The aftermarket parts that are better then OEM are mostly for modifications and generally cost more then OEM parts,u-joints and ball joints are a good example.The good u-joints will cost 2-10 times more then OEM,just a example is my HP44 760 u-joints,OEM joints (Spicer) are $20 each,the best aftermarket are $250 each.
