Post subject:  CEL on, need to purchase a scanner - recommendations?

I have a persistent CEL on but the Lib is running fine. Took it to Autozone, and their scanner came back "No Code." Is there something with the Jeep that won't let any old scanner read it's code? Is there a scanner available to me, the consumer, that can read the code?

I might have an idea on what's causing the code, but I'll put that in a new post. Can't confirm without the right scanner.

The Jeep is weird. Most scan tools can be made to work, but the average Autozone tool operator is unlikely to be able to figure it out. In other words, get the tool you want. Even the cheap Harbor Freight tool will work, but I understand the Scangauge II works well too. I plan to get one of those, but it's $160 or so.

this one has been well documented to work on the CRD:

You wouldn't happen to know if the Harbor Freight version will also allow me to clear the code, huh?

You could always try downloading the manual from HF.

Thanks for the help. Made the mistake of buying the Item# 99722 from Harobor Freight and it said. . . guess what. . . NO CODES!

So why is my CEL on, then?

Going to go return it and see if they have Item# 46030. If not I may just order the Scanguage II.

OK, this is weird. HF didn't have the "46030", so I ran down to Wal-Mart to try a scanner I saw there a week or two ago. It is an Innova.

Got home, let the Lib sit for an hour or so while I perused the forum (I'm still trying to figure out all the different alphabetical abbreviations - what the heck is ORM?) I went out to the garage and plugged it in, turned the key, and - voila! - four codes pop up, one for turbo underboost, one for EGR, one for ABS, and another I can't remember.

I can't remember because I unplugged the scanner, came back inside to look up the codes on the "Tech Only" forum. Deduced that they had to do with the CCV and EGR sooting up the sensors, so I went back to the garage to clear the codes to turn off the CEL. I plug it back in, turn the key, and now it says "No DTC's are stored in the Engine Computer." Huh? Tried to look up the former on freeze frame, but it's gone.

I ran out to a friend's house, about a 20 minute drive away, and left it plugged in the whole time. It kept scanning and saying the same thing - no codes. When I drove home, I turned off the engine in the garage and plugged it in, then immediately turned the key back to on - and it gives me the turbo underboost code again.

What is going on here?

Some scanners can only read codes when the engine is off, but the key is on.

The engine was off but the key was in the "on" position both times I got the codes, but also when I did not get the codes.
