Sorry this is going to be a bit of a long story. I bought the CRD a few days ago and here in Co. we have to have an E test for Diesels. I drove it for a couple of days and I was ready to take it for it's test and the CEL and ABS lights came on. Everything seemed to be driving and running fine. So I take it back to the dealer because they have to make it pass emissions and it won't with the lights on. So the dealer sends it off to a Dodge dealer to look at it. Now the Dodge dealer is saying that there is something wrong with at least 1 injector and they are still diagnosing the engine and the ABS light. So I don't know what is going to happen. I doubt that the dealer is going to want to spend any real money on fixing anything. Has anyone had any problems with injectors? Is there any palce to get parts for these engines for a reasonable price not counting Mopar Parts America? Or should I push to have the dealer take this Jeep back and look for another one?

Well - if you just bought - how long do you have to make a return decision? 3 days? 7 days? 30 days?
How good a deal was it? - did it take you long to find it?

I'd generally say if the dealer can fix it - then continue on - but they need to fix it correctly.
If you think they're trying to cut corners, then that tends to the give it back.
however if you got a great deal - and you can find a good mechanic to work on it - you might keep it anyway.

but one of the biggest problems since day one - has been finding a good mechanic.

Injectors have not been a problem in general (I think DrHarv had his replaced - but they replaced most of his fuel system)

ABS issues - tend to be sensors in the wheels/ diff.

I paid 10K for it. So I think that is a pretty good price considering some of the prices I have seen but I don't think that qualifies as a steal either.

I am not worried about working on or even fixing it. I have even worked on diesels before and I can usually figure almost anything out with a good manual. I am worried about part availability and cost. The only place I have found for parts is Mopar Parts America and some of their prices are a little scary. Are there any other part suppliers even over seas that supply major parts like head gaskets, injectors and internal parts?

Thanks for any advice. Everyone out here has a lot more experiance with these engines then I do.

I don't think anyone's tried ordering European or Australian parts.
(except the occasional transmission controller)

The only parts I've ordered were Mopar parts America - and they were reasonable - but I haven't had to replace any big ticket items.

If you've worked on diesels and you read through LOST - you probably know more about your diesel than any Jeep dealer - and only some of the Dodge Cummins techs will be in the same league.

as to your CEL problems - you need to find what the codes on the engine were - you can probably find the issue on LOST.

Spend $100 on a good scantool that can clear CEL's if you're just trying to get it to pass CO emissions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if there was a problem with an injector, wouldn't the engine be stumbling at idle? If nothing else I'd get a scanner just to find out if the dealer is honest and or competent. . .

LOL, that's what the dealer did. Up here in the mnts, we have no test. Just the front range folks down in the smog. Maybe move up here for a month to get it tagged. Don't have to go far. Just up a ways.

I would love to move up higher into the mountains.

I know I can get it past the E test  that is not a problem. I just want to make sure that I am not going to spend another 5K to ght the thing right. Although it seems to run great. I drove it around for 160 miles mostly in town and it got 23MPG. That does not indicate a bad injector to me. It idles smoothly for a diesel. I would think that with only 4cyl a miss would be very obvious :)

I was just kidding. I know many can't just up and move. Mine did what you discribe once. Then the next time I started it, it went away. Someone on here told me it was the BCM acting up. It hasn't done it for 30K miles so maybe just a glitch. Get the codes scanned and that will tell you what is what.

I just got off the phone with my dealer (Local Lincoln Mercury dealer) and I must say I am surprised. ATXKJ was right rear ABS wheel sensor was bad and has already been fixed. They replaced the broken seat belt buckle. Not for the surprise: They tested all 4 injectors and #3 tested bad. Dodge wants to charge me dealer $980 just for the part. My dealer has taken it back from Dodge and to my surprise has agreed to fix the injector. They just want to use their parts sources as they feel they can get a better price. I have no problems with that.

I have learned 3 things from this experience though. 1: You guys on this message board are great. You really know your stuff and are very supportive and ready to help, even if all you can do is lend a shoulder to cry on  2: I need to buy an extended warrantee because major parts for the CRD are CRAZY Expensive. 3: I really like this little truck and I am glad that everything is going to work out good.

Wiser words were never spoken. Congrats on the fix.

I'll drink to that

This is the only car I ever even thought about getting a extended warranty let alone buying one

Mine is at 48K miles. My Geico extended warranty is only good till 90K miles. I like paying only 10-15 a month for it, but it's longevity is comin in about 2 1/2 years. I guess we wil need to buy something else at that time if we decide to keep it.

I am a Good Sam RV club member. They have extended warrantee programs for RV's and cars. Their gold plan can be put on any car until it is 11 years old or 115K miles. You pay monthly, quarterly, or yearly. My CRD will be $266 per year with a $500 deductible. I chose that deductible because I figure that if it is going to cost less then that I will be fixing it myself anyway. It seems like a pretty good plan. Covers all the same things that the one they offered me at the dealer does but is MUCH cheaper.
