Post subject:  Is this overheating?

So i'm in top gear with the ac on, it's about 90f outside, towing nothing, cruising at 75 mph at 1950 rpm, at 20-23 psi, and my temp gauge is sitting at 1/4 over normal aka it's at 75% Now i'm going west up the san diego/imperial pass that's i think about a 6 % grade for 13 miles.

Is that overheating? I did not slow down or stop i thought, my mechanical fan will come on, good, because I've never heard it before and it's supposed to be loud, so i was looking forward to it. But i never heard it/felt it. I admit the cabin was somewhat noisy but yeah.

Is this bad? normal? what should i do?

THANKS!

Edited for grammar/spelling

Unless you were losing noticable power then you weren't overheating as the engine derates when it's overheating for protection.

There was a TSB for an issue of "indicated overheating" when in fact the engine temp had only risen maybe 3-5 celsius. I would ask to have that verified.

From there I would check that the mechanical fan is working. Some others seem to have indicated some fan clutches not working and that might be one of them. There is a quick test with some string that you can do to check resistance, I would search for it and go from there.

I love the stance and look of your libby, what lift do you have? and what size tires.

Probably fuel filter head.. The next mod is a pump near the head

You'll hear the seat belt reminder chime when the engine coolant reaches like 235° or something. Then you'll notice less power. That's overheating.

There's a 'service fix' to make the thermostat gage lie more if 3/4 travel bothers you.

How do you manage 75 mph at 1950 rpm? I'm at 2300 at that speed.

You were fine. Mine has gone that far riding up steep grades out here loaded with passengers. I was able to notice when the electric fan kicked on though because the needle dropped back to normal. Maybe you just never got that hot, just a little warm.

I love those big rocks all along that pass.

3.73 axel
.67 od
32 rubber (per bfg 650 revs/miles @ 40mph)

65@1706
70@1837
75@1968
80@2099
85@2230
90@2363
135@3542

I knew about the reduction in power and chime at overheat, but it was just freaky to see her move up to 75%, i don't mind it, i was just expecting the mechanical fan to engage, you know? I will check the mechanical clutch tomorrow. (been working on our motor home)

Thanks mopar64 for the advice.

In regards to the stance and whatnot yes, info is in the sig, and the new mopar head is in fact in reference to the newly designed MOPAR fuel head, also I moved my aux pump to behind the battery.

Possibly, The higher temp reading is related to those big tires and lift kit, which makes it push harder. Have you previously gone up that grade at the same ambient temp with all of those mods? Just a theory.

What is your mileage with your current setup?

Mpg is currently unknown for all highway, My last tank was 18 mpg (283mi @15.7gal) it included 130 mi at 75 and the remainder was off road, mostly high rev in sand (lots of smoke hee-hee) I think the IMII really hurts the mpg when your banging around in the dunes.

I hope i can eek out at least 22 mpg in favorable conditions. I had half expected mpg to be BETTER. i think they may be.

I mean, i am at lower boost psi and lower rpm, at higher or same mph.

How is that not a lower fuel rate, you know? These km2's are a similar width to stock.

And in regards to heat, i think it's pretty clear that the greatly increased thermal load due to the high boost pressures and probably elevated trans temp had an effect on my temps. I mean, it was pretty much maxed out in output for that speed and rpm. I want to hack off my muffler.

Is there a GOOD write up on checking the mechanical fan clutch? It seems to be ok. (spins semi freely by hand)

I would only expect better mileage in steady state highway driving.
anything related to acceleration - you now have much more mass which requires more energy to rotate.
(those are probably 50lbs/tire vs 25 stock)

also you're slightly higher now so aerodynamics are worse - so above ~60/65 you have more drag.

but if you can run a tank on the highway at about 60-65 you should be better.

Sand really takes the mileage down. Worst mileage I have ever had was in sand. It should be much better on the road, particularly slower highway speeds (50-65).
