Last Halloween, I noticed the CEL light on my jeep. I worried about it, but eventually it slipped my mind and I just got used to driving with the annoying yellow light. Couple days ago I had an alignment done, which motivated me to find out the cause of the CEL. Went to Autozone and they told me its the infamous P0401. As far as I know, its the only code. The lady who read it was a real b!%^# complaining about the other employee and barely gave me any time to see the code. The other customer she was with was nicer than she was and actually told me the code.

I've read a lot of threads in the last two days, so all the info's kinda a blur right now. I know the CEL means insufficient EGR flow, but what exactly does than mean? Is it stuck in a semi open/closed position? Should I pay the $150 fee to get the 7/70 powertrain warranty transfered and have it fixed? Or should I ignore it and go with a SEGR?

Your EGR valve is dirty and is not opening completly and maybe not closing completly either. Definetly get the 7/70 extended warranty transfered if you have many miles left on it. The top of the line one (Maximun Care, over 5,000 items) originally cost about $2500 and as I remember it's the only one that covers the EGR valve:shock: Then take it in and have it changed and if your Flow Control Valve is noisey tell them about that too. Each trip in will cost you a flat $100 so get two items fixed per trip  I'm still under the 3/36 for 2 more months but the charge back for the above 2 items was over $700

If you can't get it replaced under warranty -
try taking off the EGR and soaking it in solvent -
MrMopar had some success cleaning them

I'm just under 51,000 miles. That maximum care warranty is too much. And if the 7/70 doesn't cover it, I'm not gonna even bother right now.

I found the instructions to remove the EGR, but what kind of solvent should I use and how long should I let it soak?

GET THE WARRANTY TRANSFERRED.

With the problems that I have had in the last month, that warranty WOULD HAVE made my life a lot easier. Now, I have to sue Chrysler for their stupidity because they have decided that I don't have the 7/70... When I have proof on paper that I DID have it at one time.

Maybe you will be luckier.

This little adventure is costing me over $4000 so far.

By the way: The EGR is a vital part of the emissions system. As such, it is covered separately by an 8/80 Federal Emissions warranty that the dealers don't want you to know about. Ask them for a print out of the VIP report of your car. You should do this anyway, to get HARD COPY documentation of your car's warranties from Chrysler.

The emissions warranty is a zero-deductible IIRC, and they are required to honor it because it is an EPA mandated thing. Get your EGR fixed for free. Sadly, that's about all they will fix for free with the emissions warranty.

Sounds like you have a 05 model that has the longer power train warranty. It will not cover the egr valve. But you have approx 1/3rd of the powertrain warranty left if you transfer it.

06 MY only have a 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty

Geordi.
Per page 18 of the "warranty information" book that came with my 06 it specifically lists "exhaust gas recirculation valve and control system" as having 2 years or 24k miles.
It says only the ECM and Catalytic converter are covered for 8/80

Is there any truth to the egr being part of the mandated 8/80 fed warranty?

Never mind. It is NOT.

There are three specified major emission control components, covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995 and newer vehicles:

Catalytic converters.
The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU).
The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD).
