I've only been only using PS and/or TC-W3. But stumbled across the L.O.S.T. Mileage Discussion acetone (gasser) thread yesterday, and read one of the many on TDI Club this am. Just curious if anyone has tried Acetone (2-4 oz.) in the CRD? Oh, and am I the only one that's gotten into the "bad" habit of filling up while letting the CRD idle? |

When I had the Liberty CRD I used 4oz of acetone and 16oz of Wally World TC-W3 per tank. I used a 20 oz pop bottle to mix it in and kept it in the rear door cup holder. It did NOT improve my mileage at all but it ran smoother. I used the acetone as an injector cleaner and to thin out the TC-W3 and cause I had a gallon left in my shed that I had no other use for. You can take this for what it is worth: When the wife and I went on a trip to Tennessee I put 4oz of acetone in her Sonata that usually gets 27-30 MPG highway. That tank I got 34.6 MPG. On the way back no actetone and got 28.8 MPG. Could of been the wind gods blowing in my favor on the way down and not up or just the differences in gas(100% gas compared to E10). I don't know but it hasn't happened since (acetone or not) But we also haven't taken a trip like that since either. I always let the CRD idle when I filled it up in the winter not in the summer (with pay at the pump anyway) |

There have been some studies showing a small increase in MPG in carburetted gasoline vehicles which was attributed to finer atomization of the fuel droplets as a result of the reduced surface tension achieved with the acetone. The results however don't carry over to modern fuel injected systems and should be filed along with mothballs in the gas tank. Acetone is very useful in fuel blending applications. About 50 ml per liter of acetone has a profound effect on vegetable oil viscosity. It works similarly on WMO. Some sources say that it lowers the cetane index, while others say that it raises it. I would tend to think that it lowers it based on it's Autoignition temp of 465 °C, but Auto ignition temps and Cetane index numbers don't always have any correlation in the combustion chamber. If you are adding Acetone to improve diesel MPG, PLEASE add some kind of lubricity enhancer like two stroke oil. Anything that reduces the viscosity of your fuel is NOT good for the injection pump. Acetone has about the same cost per gallon as Power Service additive. |
