| Post subject: | THE CRD FEEL STRONG!!! BUT HOW MUCH???, I USE A GTECH PRO!!! |
TWO DAYS AGO I RESOLVE A MYSTERY PROBLEM IN MY CRD THAT FINALLY WAS RESOLVE WITH THE ADJUSTMENT AND BETTER CONTACT OF THE SENSOR THAT IS IN THE SIDE OF THE CASE OF THE AIR FILTER, THAT SOLUTION INVOLVED SOME MODS THAT I DO IN THE ROAD TO GET TO THE PROBLEM. THE MODS INCLUDED, THE "ORM", AN EXTERNAL LIFT PUMP INSTALLED AFTER THE FUEL FILTER, A COMPLETE DOWNPIPE OF 2.5 INCHES, AND A FREE FLOW PIPE, A REMOVE AND COMPLETE WASH OF MY DIESEL TANK (WAS VERY DIRTY), AND A K/N AIR FILTER. THE CRD FEELS VERY STRONG RIGHT NOW, BUT HOW MUCH???, I HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE WITH SPORTS CARS, SO I DECIDED TO USE A "GTECH PRO" THAT I USE TO TEST SOME SPORTS CARS THAT GO TO THE RACE TRACKS HERE IN PUERTO RICO, THE PRECISION OF THE "GTECH" FOR SOME PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN BETWEEN 0.1 TO 0.2 SECONDS COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF TRACK. (THE LAST CAR WE TESTED IN THE TRACK RUN AT 12.56 IN THE QUARTER MILE, THE GTEST ELAPSED 12.65 S). SO, I TEST TONIGHT THE CRD AND THE RESULTS WERE: 0-60 MPH IN 8.2 S 1/4 MILE IN 16.45 AT 85 MPH. HOW ABOUT THAT!!!!!, THE MAGAZINES SAID THAT OUR FACTORY CRD RUNS 0-60 IN 10.7 S, BUT THIS NUMBERS APPEAR MORE LIKE HONDA AND TOYOTA'S CARS. GO FIGURE!!!! "LOVE THAT TORQUE". |

Ah a K&N filter? You really want to keep that intake manifold dirty I guess. |

I noticed the sensor connector on the side of my airbox, too. What exactly is that thing? IIRC, it had a Mecedes-Benz logo on it. . .? And, not to jack the thread, but why do people HATE the K&N so much? I run a drop-in in mine. |

To be more specific, lab and real-world tests have shown significant increases of detritus (typically silica) in engine oil samples from engines run with oiled-fabric air filters as opposed to more traditional multi-fold paper ones. The benefit in power, etc is still there, but comes at a price of introducing grit into your engine. If you have a racecar that you will rebuild the motor on in 15k miles, use a K&N. If you have a diesel that you expect to get 200k miles out of, use a high-quality traditional accordion-fold filter. My $.02 Dan |

I've run them for 10s of thousands of miles and done oil samples routinely with nothing alluding to that. |

Well alrighty Ryan, sometimes denial is a wonderful thing.
Nice numbers Luisboost, I know the CRD torque is substantial, it's nice how it motivates the somewhat massive chassis. |

K&N is able to pass more air because it does worse at filtering bad stuff out. It's very simple. You've bought a Jeep, do you want to keep it away from dirt all the time, or do you take it on gravel or perhaps even on dirt? Then you should reconsider what type of filter you need. Something which filters well and limits air intake, or something which filters a tiny bit worse and improves air intake a tiny bit? IMO any offroad vehicle shouldn't be run with K&N filters, they should be run with proper filters which takes as much of the bad stuff out of the air as possible. |

| Post subject: | Aw come on K&N is great for...... |
Aircraft that never land and boats that never come to port, but for any thing like a Jeep that goes both on road and off road, dirt goes through it. I used to dismiss the data against K&N until I held one up to sunlight and saw that there were holes letting the dirt through. Now I run ProGuard 7 in both my CRD and my Wife's TDI, I no longer feel the air starvation I had with paper filters. |

GTechs and other Vericoms always show slightly slower Drag Times because they start the instant you start moving...where as a Drag Slip Times start when the car crosses the lights. Good info... |

Excuse the obvious "hose clamp" label, this pic is from tune up notes I just wrote. |

| Post subject: | Airbox modification |
I run a paper filter, since I run the CRD in dusty areas. One problem with the paper filter is that it is undersized and clogs up fast enough so it should be changed every 5000 miles. What I found helped a lot with this problem was the airbox modification that uses an older Liberty airbox to raise the air intake. (Covered elsewhere on this website) With this modification, the change interval goes up to 10,000 to 15,000 miles, a big improvement. This seems to be a good way to maintain good, low air filter restriction performance for a decent mileage interval, and also get good air filtration. |

I'm sure there are other filters that do a 'better' job, but the world isn't ending if a KN is installed. No one said the "sky was falling", we said the K&N is an inferior filter. A "high performance" vehicle requires more air and is not expected to last 200k + miles. The CRD will not move a filter minder with the factory filter, and will not gain any power, very much like the VW TDI, so the wide open holes in the K&N wlil not serve it well.
