Not bad for a highly un-wanted vehicle with known issues. |

I was looking to trade on a 2008 ML320CDI $35,000 Yes I passed. The CarMax in Miami offered my uncle $12000 on his 05 CRD with just under 42,000 miles at the time in January '08. |

That would be just 3 months after I bought my 05 with 32k on it for 15k... Sounds about right. TJKJ... Stow it. Even with the engine problems I am having now, I STILL wouldn't drive the V6, even to a dealer to trade it for the much more capable CRD. Anemic, underpowered, overweight... Yea, thats the gasser Liberty. |

Yea, I know. I thought about that after I posted it. But thinking about the CRD... I never had engine problems like this with the VW TDI, and I put 150k miles of flogging that car under the tires with nary a problem. 62k on the CRD, and one of the pistons decides to divorce the collective. That makes me sad. It should be tougher than that. Of course... Mentioning the TDI might be entirely to poke a different bear. ![]() ![]() |

I traded mine for a VW, R32. Now I can go out and not have to worry about getting back home. 250 HP, Double clutch sequential 6 speed gearbox and 4 Motion all wheel drive! I will never forgive Chrysler. The dealer service ia just as bad. |

R32 oh my friend your problems have yet to begin. If you think CRD repairs are expensive just wait. I hope you have a background in 4Motion/Syncro drivetrains and the mechanics of the DSG. If there is someone on here that has beat on their CRD harder than I have over the past 3 years, I would like to meet them. If the CRD blew up tomorrow I would have nothing bad to say about it. As for TDI, oh what a great engine the 2.0 is. Also VW still has not gotten back to me about building a Jetta TDI Cup car. ![]() |

A chevy dealer only offered me $10K as a trade on a $37K truck. Mine has 38K miles. Told them to keep the truck, I'll buy it at auction when GM files bankptcy. They were not ![]() |

Hey, it's their floorplan. The longer they hold onto those sinking ships that GM saddled them with... The lower in the water their own "dealer" ship gets. ![]() |

Not to mention that very few mechanics know how to work on them. Todd at dieseltoyz gets phone calls from local dealerships all the time to work on CRD’s because they don’t have the time, knowledge, and experience to work on them. I’m not bashing the CRD, because I plan to buy another one, but the CRD has it’s problems that the normal Joe isn’t going to deal with. I’m going to wait another year or so and pick one up for cheap. I've seen several sell for under $8,000 |

Wht do people think these things have issues? Mine has been great. Unplug the EGR and go! No different than any other diesel. The resale SUCKS though, thats for sure. |

I've seen several sell for under $8,000 Maybe they call because he specializes in diesels, and they are hoping that will include the VM Motori. My personal impression thus far of his work hasn't improved in the last few days. My CRD is still down, and now needs the replacement cylinder head completely rebuilt. It would seem that there was a VERY stripped bolt in a place where the engine shouldn't have needed anyone to be messing with, unless they were tearing down the motor. That bolt didn't get stripped by Chrysler 45k miles ago. I'm not saying any more yet, as I still don't have a clear picture of the entirety of repairs needed to get my Jeep moving again... But this has been a difficult disappointment so far. Once I know everything, so will everyone else. |

Jinstall: been bashing the CRD every day since I bought it in '04 and not 1 wrench has gone on the engine. Only regular oil change...got 135k/Km on it now. Had my share of suspension trouble though, balljoints front and rear...silent blocks...shocks...Chrysler used crap parts on the KJ's suspension. Geordi: I still don't get it, never seen engine damage like that. Maybe has something to do with the crappy fuel you get over there... |

Most threads in the CRD section are about improving, repairing, and fixing the KJ CRD problems. Most people who bought the CRD are not going to know anything about unplugging the map sensor. And I wouldn’t say the CRD is no different than any other diesel. The TDI doesn’t have near the problems that the KJ CRD has. The Jeep Cherokee 3.0 Mercedes doesn’t have near the problems as the KJ CRD. The Dodge Cummins and GM Duramax does not have the problems that the KJ CRD has. On a positive note, that’s awesome that you haven’t had any problems with your CRD, and hopefully you wont, but the KJ CRD has still been a major problem across the board. |

I just KBB'd mine at over $12K. I don't intend to trade it since it is the most sure footed car we have ever owned including some 4x4 trucks. The Ford Escape that we were thinking about buying at the time is worth $9700. I'm not complaining. |

I would call that a major problem by having to unplug a emission part to make it run right. You want to talk about problem free my father SD just past 670,000miles last week with the original 7.3 PS and original transmission, the only thing on the engine that has been replaced has been that dang glow plug relay.Tows 15,000lbs+ on a almost daily basis with it also.

Geordi, I've been following along with your progress as a silent observer, but I feel that I really need to address a few things. Firstly, I did not sell you an engine nor profit off of the sale. The engine was sold to you by another person who happened to leave it in my shop after he decided that it was not the engine he wanted to use for the project. The engine was not misrepresented either by the seller nor myself in any way. Pictures as well as supplemental data were provided to you and you made the decision to purchase the engine. You got exactly what was represented to you by the seller. It was explained to you (by myself as well as the seller) that you will need the VM service tools in order to torque the cam sprockets down and successfully install a new timing belt (included). I included the cam locks (VM1052-1053) free of charge to you (already installed) so the cams were timed correctly. All your shop needed to do was lock the cams down and (using the VM tools) install the belt setup with tensioner. Yet, oddly enough when you received the engine there was this huge surprise that the cam sprockets were loose! Of course they were loose! We had directly addressed this fact weeks before the engine even left my shop! I even went on to explain that I no longer had the vm tools but there were guys on this forum who rented them out. Furthermore, I did not replace/pull/alter the cylinder head in any way. I simply hot tanked the intake manifold to remove the sludge associated with the EGR system. I then put a new gasket/cam seals on and torqued to appropriate spec according to the factory service manual. Theoretically, I could have stripped ALL of them and it still would not require replacing the cylinder head! It sounds to me that this shop you're using is pulling a little bait and switch or they're taking you for a ride. Anyone who was genuinely surprised as to why the cams arrived free spinning has no business working with this engine. Removing the intake to clean it out is a dealer service procedure and is extremely common with these engines due to the functionality of the EGR system. It is this procedure that has given rise to items like the SEGR and the ORM. Lastly, after urging you not to go with Old Glory freight (or whoever) when shipping something that you wanted to arrive intact, you went ahead and used them anyways. I put the engine in a 4x4x4 wooden shipping crate (you originally wanted me to just stick it on a pallet) resting on a tire and secured it on all 4 sides with 2x4's using 3" wood screws. The seller actually accused me of OVER packing the engine. Yet the crate arrived with the bottom ripped out and the engine on it's side and you blame my packing job? This is why I took pictures of the engine before it left my shop as I am familiar with these shipping brokers tactics and I wanted to minimize the appearance of impropriety on behalf of myself or the seller. Despite all of this, you still feel that we short-changed you or misrepresented the engine in some way. It seems to me that going forward, you need to listen to what people are telling you before you start slandering others on forums. I got a kick out of the flywheel installed backwards thing though! The engine has no flywheel, it has a flex plate as the transmission is an automatic. Furthermore, the crankshaft is keyed so putting it on backwards would take some doing. I routinely perform warranty work requiring complete pull out and reinstallation for DC in 3 days. These guys have had your setup for almost a month now and you're still not on the road! That's unbelievable! I would love to see a detailed analysis of this stripped bolt that requires a new cylinder head! Please post pics... |
