| Post subject: | Blown Turbo |
So I'm cruising down the highway and my 05 CRD lost its 'torque' when I pressed on the throttle. In fact it was so bad I looked at my wife and said I think the turbo just went out, a few more pounces later I confirmed something was majorly wrong as a huge plume of white smoke came pouring out of the back of the Jeep. It honestly looked like I was at the Brickyard 400 in my stock car with a blown engine….but anyway I digress. I got her off the road and had it towed to my house. I checked the levels of all the fluids and the only noticeable problem was the engine oil. After touching base with a friend who used to be a mechanic he indicated that obliviously the oil dumped into the exhaust causing the smoke screen. The stealership then confirmed that it was a blown turbo (not just hoses as most might suspect). They indicated that they would replace the $1100 turbo (plus they would cover labor), but they then told me I had to replace my hoses for $341 (P/L included) and I also needed to have a intercooler flush for $310. I indicated that if the turbo hadn’t have blown then I wouldn’t need any of this done. We all know how crappy the original hoses, but I still played devil’s advocate with the stealership. I then said I would call Chrysler and ask them to pay for these residual parts and maintenance. My case is still open with Chrysler, so I’ll let you know how it turns out. However with that said, what else should I ask them to replace/fix/check after the mess that this caused. My mechanic buddy mentioned the following: catalytic converter, O2 Sensor. But I’m not sure of the components that could/would have been affected by this type of catastrophic failure. Any thoughts for me? |

If this is a warranty repair all your mentioned parts should be covered as the blown oil seal caused the issue. You might have to take it up with the gov. now though. I hear they are backing all GM and Chrysler warranties. By the way, you should post more often! Two in over three years is gotta be a record. |

| Post subject: | Clarification on the warranty repair |
Yeah yeah I know...two posts in 3 years is pretty lame. Sorry yall. I'm out of my factory bumper to bumper, but I'm still covered by the powertrain warranty. Therefore they are only covering the powertrain...and they say 'hoses are covered under the b2b warranty, but are considered regular maintenance in the powertrain'. Which is precisely why I said whatever and called Chrysler. |

Search for my posts. It sounds like you are having a repeat of what happened to me almost exactly 7 weeks ago. For your sake, I hope your experience is better than mine. Chrysler has taken the position that I have NO warranty, when I have hard copy of their own internal paper that says I do. That same screen on their end now shows different information, and their answer was (not very politely) to piss off. I'm still waiting to get my Jeep back after having to replace the entire ENGINE from the failed turbo. What caused the engine to go? The low oil, and it sounds like you ran yours even lower than I did. Mine took 4 quarts and was back at the "full" mark on the dipstick. There are 2 threads about this in the recent past. One is "Turbo installed now what's the matter" and I can't remember the name of the original thread. |

Sorry to hear about your woes suedely. It would be really informative to see some photos of the deceased turbo, as well as a failure analysis report. Turbo chargers usually don't just go kaput like that but this appears to be second one in a couple of months to do it. Fill out your sig line so we can see how many miles, what mods, etc that you have. |

This happened to me as well. However they they covered all of it except for about 200 dollars. There was a co-pay that I had to take care of. What I am wondering is why are our turbos going out??????? Peter |

A common thread with these failures seems to be a sudden dumping of oil into the intake and/or exhaust. Normally that wouldn't happen from worn out bearings. I'm wondering whether the oil drain orifices on these puppies are prone to plugging with coke. Geordi: did you ever take your blown unit apart? |

Yea I did, and there didn't seem to be an excess of crud built up anywhere. I posted pictures of the failure in one of the threads, I think it was the first one. The VNT moved easily, a LOT easier than the vacuum servo did by hand, but that's OK b/c the vacuum servo is designed to exert a LOT of force anyway. Trying to compress one of those things without using a vac is HARD. The drain outlet also didn't seem to be coked up. The only thing I can point to is the weather - it was FRIGID that night, and 32 when I left for class at 1:30pm. The car had been under a shaded canopy and not plugged in, so it was stone-cold. The failure happened within 2 miles of starting off. The failure on mine was that the turbine wheel side of the shaft snapped, behind the friction weld. I strongly suspect a lack of lubrication, b/c the compressor snail is in PERFECT condition, no impacts happened... Yet the center shaft is completely frozen in place. The only thing I can surmise is that it overheated and welded itself shut, and began leaking oil into the exhaust side. But what I want to know is: How will having an EGT gauge in the entrance of the turbo (at the manifold outlet) tell me that this might be happening again? Or a boost gauge - how would that be useful to warn me? What kind of readings would I see from the gauges, BEFORE the turbo grenades like it did? |

I'm just curious, did you religiously cool down the turbo according to the instructions in the manual? Have you owned the jeep since new? |

Have you owned the jeep since new? I was wondering that as well. If the bearings get coked up, that may account for a short lived turbo. We have to idle down into our subdivision at 15 mph for almost a minute, then stop at the mailbox, then on down to our house. Then we idle in the garage for about 30-45 seconds. Ours has always done a cooldown cycle. |

My 2005 is having the turbo replaced right now, same symptoms and effects, same advice from service shop. I have a great extended warranty that I bought when I got the Liberty two years ago, which is a good thing because it has had so many things go bad. Still, I have to pay for the tube/hose replacements. Seems a little weird, all these 2005s with turbo problems . . . and aggravating. |

Yes our warranty is with Obama Motors now. |
