| Post subject: | orm and check engine light |
ok.. if we're in the US we know that doing on ORM mod will cause the check engine light to come on..no big deal.. so here's the question.. what other codes could be thrown that only show up in the check engine light? for example low oil..there's an idiot light for this.. the upshot being..so what if the light is left on and so weekly the jeep is scanned for additional codes? is this likely to cause problems because of a missed catastrophic code? what would be an example? this is all coming about because the wife's jeep started not running right again..it was raining..again..started running rough at idle..ok at speed..then wouldn't start at all..changed the fuel filter and got it running again. today I took out and cleaned the EGR valve. I would like to disable it and install a SEGR, but this is not in the budget at the moment..soon though. so for the time being leave the ORM and live with the check engine light?? Thanks -dkenny |

If a trouble code is a serious one the CEL will flash, or the vehicle will immediately go into limp mode. As you already pointed out, there are trouble lights for low coolant, transmission overheat, TPS mismatch, etc... I have run with the CEL on for 50 thousand miles. |

Manual versions won't go into a limp mode only auto's. |

Are you sure about that one? I myself don't know first hand but I would bet money that if a manual version CRD started overheating or threw a P0299 or P0093, that it would reduce power. |

Well that's what the mechanic told me at the dealer when i took her in for the P0610 ECM fault, he said only the auto's go into a limp mode and not the manuals. Interesting one to research anyway |

ok what cause the 610 code..what other lights came on...was the limp mode the only result? net result..I'll agree with nursecosmo.. so the auto goes in to limp mode.. I guess you've never changed the fuel filter in the cold rain...twice...even worse the 2nd time might have just been the EGR valve..limp mode...it still runs..not well but it runs..plugged filter/partially stuck open EGR..doesn't run! may or may not have codes? sure disconnect the MAF sensor the EGR is nonoperational but the check engine light comes on..SO WHAT DAMAGING codes can happen? the ones that one the check engine light indicates?? -dkenny |

No damaging event can happen which would not trip one of the other MILs or cause a limp mode. The continuous CEL is mainly for minor events, where as if it flashes, there could be a more serious event, but the computer trips a limp for those ones. |

I unplugged the MAF. should I also unplug the EGR and the FCV( i think). the valve the closed to draw a vacuum when the system want the EGR to work? My wife is still saying its not running quite right..hard to start and other random symptoms( ok I think there random, maybe not) rant ON!! ignore if you like.. it just a sham that a newer diesels cannot run as well as an older diesel..my DD8.2L turbo..no glow plugs, no grid heaters..ALL mechanical..starts faster than my wife 06 liberty, and faster than my 99 dodge ram..consistently. to be fair the when the temp go below 20F..the DD doesn't like to start..but it does.. but I'm not talking about then..she run her jeep for 15 mintues, so its warm. stop for lunch and my old DD will start faster. every time.. oh well so much technology..and EGR on the diesel that feed dirty air in to the system after the air cleaner? dumb idea squared. -dkenny |

FYI - if you're going to run with the CEL on - make sure you can read codes. I've got the Scangauge II - but one of the $40 Harbor Freight's will work too just make sure you know what's going on. |
