just what would a failing egr system sound like and how would i know if mine is on its way out? Thanks. Oh by the way I tried the ORM and loved the difference, just a pain plugging it in again before restart.

well..if its failing intermittently like my wife's..runs great then doesn't idle well...we have a single cylinder horizontal diesel in our boat..it sound like that running on 1 cylinder...I suspect that it was failing partially open..

you might need to remove the EGR to clean it and/or plug it.. if you plug it without SEGR you might have to deal with codes.

You say EGR "system". That also includes the flow control valve that has a motor driven throttle plate. When it's going bad you'll hear grinding gears on the drivers side of the engne at shutdown. In our CRD's when the EGR valve opens the Flow Control Valve closes the air intake partially to suck in egr gas

no grinding gear sound on my wifes..sometime it didn't want to idle smooth..

hard to clean..well..to 2 bolts to remove the horizontal pipe aren't too bad..remove the fuel filter first it helps..
the other 4 bolts that hold the valve and solenoid on...well those 8mm bolts are harder..the front right you'll need a 8mm wrench instead of the socket..I would suggest a flat ratchet type wrench..

now the water coolant lines..for me those were the worst part.. I ended up by cutting them in half with a knife to get the unit out.. i had a hard time after the unit was out to get the lines off..forget inside...

I should also mention most of the work has to be done with one hand..especially when you like to be able to use 3 hands..;)
