 Post subject: Transmission Code P0715 ??? UPDATE - FIXED?

Looking for a replacement transmission for the CRD and wondering the best route. I found a rebuilt one for about $1200 that doesn't seem too bad but I don't want to have to do it again anytime soon. Which yeah liberty transmission will fit the CRD, it is the same trans as the gas Liberty correct?

I replaced the trans filters (with NAPA brand) around 5000 miles ago and I did notice a few hard shifts once in a while but not hard shifting. Today I pulled my buddies 1500lb fishing boat no more then 50 miles, it pulled it fine and it was way under the tow limit. On the way home with out the boat it started shifting funny and not it wont go into over drive and it has a huge delay in shifting. Nothing to do with turns but maybe the boat ramp triggered it? Need some input here because I going to need to get it fixed asap and don't want to wast money at a trans shop if I don't have too. Thanks.

Not even close. We have the 545 RFE. The Gasser has the 42RLE. Big price difference.

'02 3.7's and some '03 3.7's came with the 45RFE,same case as the 545RFE but different guts.

Ok, good to know. Now it seems like a straight forward replacement, If I find a good priced one does anyone have any good tips for when I replace it?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, I found one with 18k miles on it for $700. I wonder what a rebuild cost would be, I know I could swap out the old one for a new one but I don't think I could deal with a rebuild.

Well it did end up showing the check engine light after a few miles, so I disconnected the battery for a few min and took it for a ride, it came right back on. I bought home the code scanner from work, I'll scan it and post the code and see if anyone else has seen it before. Sucks.

As for the 'relearn without the boat' It has a few miles on it now and it still shifts slow and hard, and no overdrive.

I'm thinking about taking it into the dealer and letting them check it out to see if its something stupid that I can't figure out. I hate to wast the $100 because I'm not letting them put a trans in it when i can do it myself for much cheaper. Maybe I should check with local trans shop also but I just figured the dealer would be more likely to have seen the problem before.

would it be worth getting a Suncoast TC to put in when I replace it? How difficult is it to but one is when the tranny is out, nothing weird, just pop it on? Anything else I might want to do before it goes back in?

I wouldn't trust the dealer to tell me that the sun was going to rise tomorrow. You are MUCH better off with an independent that you trust, or just take that $100 and put it towards a good scanner for yourself. I haven't used the basic Autoenginuity device that I purchased since I got the enhanced, I might be willing to sell it to you, and you should be able to easily pull the code with that.

Bonus: With the autoenginuity device, you aren't getting the generic OBD data, you are getting a device that can speak Mopar to your CRD and tell you exactly what is wrong without a code book.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the dealer, they are just trying to make a buck. But I was hoping that they might have seen something like this before and give me some ideas. I just got off the phone with a shop ( heard he knows his stuff) and they will look at it for free. I have a scanner at work (basic OBDII) and I'll scan it when I get home tonight.

OK, I'll give you that one. The reason they are different part numbers is because of internal changes common to all 45 or 545RFE between 2003 and 2005. If you're junkyard shopping, it will fit and it will work and even if it used to be a 45RFE, if you use a 2005 or 2006 KJ CRD transmission controller, now it's a 545RFE. Or alternately, I can turn it back into a 45RFE with the flick of a bit...

Not really.The 545RFE TCM will unlock the 2nd prime gear ratio(that is only available in the 45RFE when downshifting on certain passing speeds) and will not give the 2nd overdrive in a 45RFE.

That isn't entirely true. I have seen KJ CRDs with the 545 use 2nd prime when downshifting at certain speeds and also while trailer towing. The 45rfe just doesn't use the extra overdrive, 'tis only a SW change between the two.

Yes the 545RFE is actually a 6 speed,just like the 45RFE is actually a 5 speed auto.The internal parts are different and programming will not convert a 45RFE to a 545RFE.I have torn down both,very different inside they are.

Well I pulled this code, P0715, the scanner says ''Input/turbine speed sensor a circuit malfunction. Any ides on what this would have to do with the trans, sounds to me like a turbo problem?

You have 2 sensors,one monitoring the input speed of the trans,and one monitoring the output speed.Sounds like the input sensor went south.Very easy to replace and looking at about $50-$100 for the part and 2mins to replace,just unhook connector and remove one bolt.It is the sensor on the drivers side of the trans that is located close to the bellhousing.
