Post subject:  Broken Glow Plug WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here we go,I dropped off the wifes CRD for #4 Glow plug, three hours later I get a phone call from my mechanic. This is a man I trust all my rigs too,and he's telling me #1 cylinder glow plug is broken off in the head,And he wanted me to know that it was not a good thing. He said that the head needed to come off as not to risk porcelin to fall down in cylinder and trash the engine. He honestly told me that was over his head, this man is very intelligent and I have known him for years and I trust his judgement. So that said I begin to outsource for a certified CRD tech,Two bullshitters and a hour later I nailed Down a Deal $875 out the door, new head gasket ,fixed glowplug (I have OEM that I already bought),and labor.I had to call in a favor and wait the week for OEM parts(did you know there are three different Head gaskets for our engines?),and back of the list wait....SO anyone have this happen?what did it cost ?Did you have the timing belt done at the same time?If so how much labor?Lastly Did I get a good Deal?....................H

I'll let you know when I get mine back (probably next week depending on when the head gasket shows up)

actually mine's extended warranty - so I won't have dollars - they normally do put hours
and the mechanic was the one who broke the glow plug.

I told them to put on a new timing belt.

Three different head gaskets? Different thickness?? Improvements?

I have not had anything like this done but I would go ahead and do the timing belt as it has to come off anyway that will save you the cost later. There are 3 different head gaskets for these engines. These are interference engines and the difference in the head gaskets is the thickness. It is used to make sure that there is proper valve clearance. They are identified by a dot if I remember correctly. A gasket with no dot is one thickness then a dot is another then the dot is moved to another position gives the third thickness. As long as you are not having the block or head machined you should be OK using the same thickness of gasket that you removed.

VW diesels use different head gaskets depending on how much the pistons protrude above the top of the block  I suspect these are the same :D

ATXKJ,

Who did you get the extended warranty from? I was told that my extended warranty does not cover the glow plugs.

Edit,

Vegi H,

The guy I have working on mine said around $600 if he has to remove the head. I'm praying that he can just change the one plug and this will all be over and done with for at least a little while.

thanks guys, the $875 was including Gaskets, and extracting broken plug from head.I am gonna go ahead and have the timing belt done too(less play money this month definately  ),but I can have the piece of mind that all the BIG thing in the engine have been done.On a side note, will the segr be a issue when booting the rig back up? (battery will be disconnected for awhile)Also anything else to check as a wear item with head off? This is definately taking money from my mods on the excursion this month, but can't win them all.Oh,and should I tell the Dealership about the WVO system before I show up with the jeep in tow?.....................H

Another thing to consider is that this engine is used in other applications. In the marine and industrial applications it has more steel parts (steel head) and in the automotive applications it has more aluminum parts to save weight.

It would be interesting to know if the steel head fits on this application. If so it might be worth the upgrade if you are looking to eventually add more power (bigger injectors, water/meth injection, chipping, etc).

My extended warranty is Chrysler
(I guess the Government is taking over their warranties now)

If the tip of the glow plug fell off and is down in the cylinder, can't one just take a small hose and a vacuum and suck it up?
There might be more to this story than I understand.

Not sure but I think the problem is the hex part where you put the wrench is broken and there's just a stub in the head

Not relevant, but interesting is this video showing broken glow plug extraction on a Mercedes:

The cost of all the special tools must be outrageous.

To be honest, this exact engine is only used in automotive applications. There isn't a steel head that would bolt onto this engine. Yes VM does make marine engines that are of the same displacement and share some similarities but things like heads, etc. aren't interchangable.

Not sure if this is applicable to the CRD:

AFAIK the timing belt can only be tightened once, so you need to replace it.
