Starter/Starting Falure.

In the last week MY crd has failed to start (kinda).

It sounds like the starter motor is turning but the teeth are not engaging the crankshaft

When i let off the starter and get back on it, it starts right up. This has happened three times so far, the first couple times i instinctively let off but the last time i stayed on it to listen more closely.

I suspect my battery but everything appears fine.

Starter Solenoid? What should i look for?

The bendix is sticking in. Time for new starter.

If you have the original Optima Red top it maybe time for a change.

If the problem were the battery, there would not be enough juice to turn the engine over once the flywheel was engaged. It sounds more like a Solenoid problem than anything. I'm not aware that any Bendix drive starters have been used in American autos within the past 40 years, but I've been wrong many times before.

yeah! I had a bendix drive on my boat motor. When it would stick or not engage fully all I had to do is neverseize the shaft never a problem again. Good simple drive as long as it stay clean and dry.

On a starter the part that shoots out when the motor spins is called a bendix.

nursecosmo, I know what you mean that the solenoid was not the bendix drive gear. I was talking about a boat motor starter that engaged by centrifical force sliding screw action not by the electrical force of an solenoid. The boat motor starter didn't have a solenoid at all much like ford cars through the 80's

Many boat motors and other small engines still use Bendix drive starters. They are superficially similar to the Ford Movable Pole Shoe starter used by Ford from 1973 through 1990. internally they are very different. Apparently some of the old timers still call the overrun clutch a "bendix" (OTH, is not being singled out at all :wink:

)

CRDMiller, if you have a starter/alternator repair shop in your area. they usually charge less to remove, rebuild, and replace the starter, than if you were to buy a new one from the dealer and replace it yourself.

I seem to no longer have this problem. As stated earlier it happened a total of 4 times within several days, but has not happened since. It's a jeep.
