Cat 2 Fuel FIlter Kit no longer available

Just spoke with Greg at Lubrication Specialists LLC, the former supplier of the Cat 2 filter kits. I did that after searching their web site and asking Old Navy about the kit. He suggested contacting Greg.
Here's the skinny: Greg said that he had made up 100 of the kits over two years ago. It took that long to sell them. He was no longer going to do that due to the cost and tying up his money for that long. Seems like a reasonable marketing approach.
I also asked it he could tell me what parts to get so I could make up my own kit. He said that wouldn't do much good because some of the parts were specially machined and no longer available. He said the Cat filter is the easy part.
So the outcome is we who are new to the CRD game are out of luck when it comes to a better fuel filtration system unless there is another enterprising individual who will take the plunge into assembling a kit.

Part of the problem with the fuel system on the CRD is the filter head traps air due to the lack of a lift pump or an air bleed tied to the fuel return. Additionally the factory fuel head heater tends to overheat when exposed to air, because of air accumulation. The Cat filter addresses neither of these problems, and reduces factory functionality as well as it loses the water in fuel (WIF) indication.

The reason the Cat doesn't sell well is you can do better with a Racor filter that retains the WIF and has a better heater and primer bulb.

You could still use a Cat filter, as a secondary filter in addition to the already-installed version. A simple stand-alone filter head such as by Permacool - just the bare bones metal bracket and necessary fittings - with 1"-14 thread for the Cat filter. I tystrapped mine sideways to the back of the battery.

Picked up the CAT 2 from Cowcatcher today. Pretty simple kit. There was way more to the same kit for my TDI Jetta. I know this topic is old, but does anyone have any hints or tips for installation of this baby? Should I take the filter head OFF the vehicle? Etc etc etc.

Did you get the instructions with it? Its 6 of one and a half a dozen of the other about taking it off the firewall. I personally like to take it off because it allows you to clean it up real well before installing the new part. The last thing you want is a chunk of debris in the fuel system. If you didn't get instructions let me know. I think I can dig them up.

Make sure you have a good fuel head first - in fact I'd recommend you get the new redesigned one.

There were 2 issues with the CAT conversion - and neither were filter problems.

1st - some folks were having problems with air in the fuel - due to the leaking heater plug - but we hadn't figured that out - so the CAT as a true 2 micron filter - made the air- in fuel worse

2nd - most were still under warranty - if you take it to a dealer that doesn't know anything about diesels and can't troubleshoot without a code (and air-in-fuel does not give a code) - but you have a bright yellow flag saying non-standard part - they're going to blame the non-standard part.

if you didn't have a problem with the fuel head - then the CAT is a great improvement.

Thanks AT. When did they come out with a redesigned fuel head? I supposed I can get one at the dealership???

As the the rating - there is no accepted standard for filter ratings - so the same filter can be called 2,4 or 10 depending on the percentage of particles they stop - and in order to compare numbers - they have to tell you the percentage.

if you read the text - they say 98% of 4 micron which is pretty good, that probably means about 90-95% of 2 micron.
Jeep doesn't list a number on their filter - although the Factory service manual mentions a 3 micron no percentage.
and Wix sells a replacement they list as 10 micron, no percentage (and they didn't reply to my email)

no one sells an 'absolute' number for a fuel filter.
(you can get them for gases - and they're seriously expensive)
