Just purchased the Samco kit for the Jeep and it came yesterday. One question before the install... When I look inside one of the hoses it looks as if there is a bit of residue from the manufacturing process. It isn't loose or wet in anyway but it does rub off with my finger if I rub over it a few times. It's on the inside of the smaller of the two diameter hoses should I be concerned and try to clean it out or not worry about it and install them? I'm concerned that if I try to clean it with a rag i'll just get lint in there and do more damage than the residue itself.

Thanks,

Having worked for a rubber goods maker who produced radiator hoses, I would guess the residue is a trace of a metallic soap used on the mandrel to form the hoses. This should be harmless in small quantities and I would just leave it on.

These hoses are made by taking short lengths of straight hose, forcing them over a mandrel which is bent in the desired configuration, and then cooking the hose in live steam. Once the hose is cooked (vulcanized) and cooled, it is pulled off the mandrel. A soap solution is used prevent it from sticking to the mandrel. (Even so they can still be a ##$$%% to get off the mandrel)

Hoses went on no problem in about an hour. One question though...even with the provent on the CRD from about 25000 miles the inner walls of the hoses were coated in oil. Was this normal for all others who installed the hoses? Just curious if there is any way to prevent this without doing the SEGR mod?

Thanks,

I think the Provent lets a little oil through, but nothing compared to the oil that went through before the Provent was installed. Another thing I've found is that you want to be careful about at an oil change is to add just the recommended 6.4 quarts. This will bring the oil level to the middle between the marks. If you put in extra oil to bring it to the top mark, it will just be quickly blown out of the engine and will add to the oil the Provent has to filter out.

I just did the Samco's today.Easiest mod by far!
My hoses were completely coated in oil.
Was I supposed to put the old mesh hose protectors on?

I didn't, I cleaned them up good and put them to the side. I am watching carefully for any rubbing - if I see any I will put them on.
