Post subject:  Help PLEASE!!!

Hello, I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD that threw an engine code. I got the code from Auto Zone...it was a code for the EGR valve, MAF sensor, and low turbo pressure. I took my Jeep into a Crysler/Jeep dealership and they claim that the intake manifold was clogged with carbon and would cost $3600 to clean and replace the EGR valve. I have a Platinum Extended Warranty and the warranty company said they will not cover any repairs because it is carbon build up. Can you please help...any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated...have you ever heard of this? And, is there anything I can do? I am mechanically inclined; however, I am not sure how extensive this job would be. Does anyone know any trustworthy diesel mechanics from the St. Paul, MN area? Thanks.

First I would do the ORM and unplug your MAF which will close down your EGR and clean your MAP sensor and run some B-100 for a while that will clean up a whole bunch of crap. Oh and while your at it vent your crankcase ventilation into something other than your turbo. that way you will keep that clean to. I vent mine into a empty milk jug stuffed with paper towels which I change every month or so. I plugged up the original hose to the turbo with a 3/4 inch bolt then ran a new hose to the milk jug with a filter on the end of that hose laying in the paper towels you would be surprised all the oil fumes that comes out of that hose, the paper towels do a great job of absorbing the oil. I have run mine since 15,000 that way and have not had any problems. I am at 109,000 now.

good suggestions above however i don't think the B100 will clean your intake...but you can run it and do as suggested...

under the wiring harness where it comes over the drivers side block there are two plugs, the back one is the MAP sensor... take that out and clean it up... use something with no chlorine... MAF sensor cleaner works... put it back in and clear the codes then go from there...

i feel that you could argue the carbon thing with the warranty saying that the EGR made all that mess but who knows if that'll work

*edit* the MAP sensor is a small torx like a 10 or something... i just know which key to take off my multi-torx tool

unfortunately - it's not a failure - its the design.
The closed Crankcase Ventilation system blows oil into the intake manifold.
The EGR system blows hot exhaust gases into the intake manifold.
so you end up with baked on oil in the intake manifold.

The EGR valve should have a list price around ~$200 - but Mopar Parts America has them for ~$140 - and you could probably take the old one off - soak in a solvent and clean it up.

The low turbo pressure - might be a split turbo hose - the oil causes it to break down - best replacements are Samco

no idea about MN mechanics (or Texas for that matter - I expect to work on my own)
and 3rd party warranties - don't work very well.

Of course a Provent (or similiar) installed when new would have prevented this mess. The intake manifold will only be part of the problem. You will need to clean your turbo hoses (assuming they have not degraded already) and flush the intercooler to be sure you get all the muck out of the intake side of the engine.

These engines will last a long time - if a few steps are taken to ensure that the EGR and CCV system designs are improved for longevity (and not simply to comply with an emission regulation at the time of certification).

Tell them to replace the "thermal discombobulator" and check your "muffler bearings" while they are at it. All CRDs have carbon in the manifold. I'm sure that it is not "clogged" with it, but the MAP sensor could probably use a cleaning. No cleaning job should ever cost $3600, unless you look like a lolipop.

Yer gettin hosed there, big boy. Get up at about 8:00 on Saturday morning and run to Auto Zone. Buy some CHLORINE-FREE Brake Parts Cleaner and a multi-torx tool. Go back to the house and log on to:

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=22630

After you finish cleaning the caked-up mess in the MAP sensor and re-installing it, accidentally unplug the MAF sensor ( http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=22631 ) and leave it that way. Then, while your under the hood, run your hands along the intercooler hoses from the turbo to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the intake to check for cracking, splitting, and excessive oil sweating. If you got $300 or so to spend, order some Samco hoses for a project for next Saturday.

At this point it should be about 10:00 am. Return to the couch and proceed to watch hockey, or drive your CRD to the golf course and enjoy your Saturday.

And you can send the $3600 to the forum for sharing among the gurus here... :D

Just feel a LOT better that you didn't help that dealer continue to fleece the populace. Some of these dealers DESERVE to go under. Sadly, I'm sure those are the ones they will retain.

When cleaning the map you'll need to remove the wiring tray above it. It's held on by 3 awfull little clips. Once off replace them with 6mm x 1 nuts and it will be a breeze next time  Also the first time the allen head screw holding the map on is removed you'll find it redicously tight
