EHM Smell?

Post subject:  EHM Smell?
I'm considering doing an EHM this weekend when I do the airbox mod. Exactly how bad a smell are we talking about here? Is this something pungent, that will make fellow motorists turn to me with hatred gleaming in their eyes, or will it only be noticeable when idling in my garage?

I reversed mine after about a month. Didn't like the oil in the driveway nor the smoking from under hood when idleing. If you used some sort of catch-can with a filter media it would be better. Didn't try the Provent but tempted to fab my own.

Here's what I did, I took a 1 gallon milk container cut open a hole large enough to get my hand into. Then I ran a hose from the crankcase vent on top of the engine down to where the filter housing used to be , I now run a filter directly on the end of the inlet tube so I have all that empty space where the air filter box used to be, so I run a high temp hose down to my milk jug with a little ventilation filter clamped on the end of that hose inside the milk jug and then I stuff folded paper towels inside the milk jug and about every month or so I change the paper towels which become completely soaked with the oil that comes out of the crankcase. Its better to be soaked up in the paper towels than to be sent back into the turbo charger don't you think.

Both of my CRDs have the EHM and I never smell it inside the vehicle. Outside, only when standing in front of it with the engine running. It doesn't smell bad, really. When stopped at night you can see steam in the headlights, and there are the inevitable oil spots on the garage floor.

Well put kccrd.Reckon I'm gonna give the EHM a go.
Between the EHM and the new samco hoses,hopefully I can help save the turbo. :?

Linewarbr,I should be getting my SEGR soon,so if your still game to team up,I'll be ready.How was the Samco install?
Oh yea LW & 2.8,check out the southern and down right section for a 4th of July Eglin run.

I'm down. I just got my V6 Airbox in yesterday, and my Samco's will be shipped out next Wednesday from Turbo Wholesale. Had to wait to get the blue ones.

I was thinking to do it all at once - EHM, Samco's, and airbox and then maybe do the SEGR when I change my fuel filter again. It looks like the wire needs to be run through from the cabin just behind the filter head. That would be easier to do with the filter head off, so I might as well wait until it's time to change the filter. What's your schedule like on doing the SEGR/ Samco install?

I just used a big bolt and about a 1/16 thick piece of cork and then I clamped the hose tight to the bolt. The cork was just to get an airtight seal. I just checked it last weekend and the bolt and the cork looked like I just installed it. They both have been in about 2 years.

Don't let anyone fool you, if you run any venting under the hood it will stink. I tried it for about a week.
The cabin was sucking in fumes when I turned the a/c on. It would actually make my head hurt.
My temp fix is I used a 5/8th heater Hose. I zip tied it on and ran a few feet off it, snaking it down and out by the trans skid plate. Zip tied everything in place for now until I install my own provent.
You will also want to plug off the hose you are taking off. I used a plastic cap and some duct tape for now.
I smell it only when out of the Jeep or at a Red Light with the window down. I just need the time to get this on there. 8)

I don't care for the look or size of the Pro Vent so I will be using the Aero Space Breather Tank. It is filter vented to help with the fumes and can be mounted a little easier.

A 2 dollar bolt from home depo (it fit perfectly i think about 1 inch long) and 2 hose clamps.

As far as the smell goes, the LOCATION that you place your "catch can" (use a 20 oz soda bottle and your good) and also whether or not your cowl/hood gasket is in properly in place, determines whether or not the vapor goes into the cabin intake.

My vapors blow out of the front of my liberty.Looks cool at night.

But still, you smell it occasionally.

I use the passenger side corner stuffed all the way down (a 20 oz bottle with holes cut in it)

Is there any possible way you could post a pic? I'd like to see that, because that sounds like what I'd like to do, rather than have it drip in the garage.

I work in Garyville, right across the street from a NAPA "Truck Center" for big rigs. I called over there and the guy said no, but referred me to a hardware store. Was going to hit up Lowe's tomorrow and check that out.

Funny thing is they have on their sign out front, "We make hydraulic hoses" and I think that would do the trick since hydraulic = oil, but maybe they don't have clear hose. I have my Samco's on order and want to run EHM for a couple of weeks before putting them on so I don't just introduce old gunk into the new hoses.

....all engines were EHM from the get go. Then CARB's predecessor determined this was the cause of Smog coming from gassers. They kept adding on more and more emissions control goodies and later on decided Diesels also needed positive crankcase ventilation.
All this time they have ignored the Pot Heads blowing smoke into the air and vehicles from other countries with expired plates discharging eye burning noxious gasses into the air :lol: :lol: :lol:
Build a big city like LA in a stupid place and blame every body else.
When cars, SUVs, and Trucks purify the air by putting out cleaner exhaust than the air going in, CARB will start going after Tire fume emissions and require special coatings be put on tires and scrubbers on tire stores :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Dude I think I hate CARB, and I don't even live in Cali. Freakin brainwashers, and all the sheep just follow along, bleating merrily. . .

I take comfort in knowing that the more complete combustion my engine is producing by not having EGR is helping the environment, one stroke at a time. . .
