Engine oil cooler?

Has anybody installed an engine oil cooler?
Would something like this work on the CRD?

Not to be "smart" but why? Assuming a functional tstat and an unclogged coolant system diesel engines are not known for overheating; not that you cannot overheat a diesel engine but that's typically related to a cooling system problem (includes a bad fan clutch) and I don't see that an oil cooler will prevent that type of overheating. Besides the CRD already has an oil cooler (PN 5142820AA - see figure 2.8L-710 of the 2006 parts manual) although I'll admit it depends on coolant flow to work; at least I assume so.

Setting that aside your picture looks like what's typically installed on a motorcycle for oil cooling. Back in the day when I installed one of these it was on an air cooled motorcycle where extra cooling was a good idea. I'd think adding this to the CRD could be done and it might add some cooling to the oil although plumbing it into the system might be interesting. I suppose it could be done via a "T" off the oil pressure sending fitting with hoses routed to a remote install. How that would play out for system oil pressure I have no clue.

I dont know why either, it was just a thought.
The pic above is a "sandwich" kit where the adapter goes in between the oil filter and engine.
The adapter fits most Ford/Chevy gas engines.
Because our engine will accept a Ford FL-1A oil filter I wondered if such a kit would fit our CRD.

I have never been a fan of water cooled oil coolers though.

Just for discussion. I've never tried that Ford filter but if the adaptor will fit the base for that Ford filter then in theory it should fit the CRD filter base. That said:
1. I assume the base spins on just like the filter in which case I wonder where the outlet/inlet for the cooler would wind up. Might or might not be accessible; I don't know.
2. the adaptor will sit between the filter and the filter base thereby extending the "length" of the filter by the amount of space the adapter occupies. This might or might not cause ground clearance or skid pan clearance problems especially if you favor, as I do, an oversize filter.
Still leaves the issue of routing hoses to/from a remote cooler mount location.

Probably could be made to work but I, personally, would not bother.

The EGR system adds about 40 to 50 degrees to the effective oil temperature, and significant soot load. Both increase the rate of lube oil degradation. A bypass filter in combination with an oil cooler might be a really good thing.

CRD's come with Engine oil coolers.

it's oil/water under the turbo.

A fully functional EGR system probably does add heat and soot to the oil but with a GDE tune the EGR function is minimized to the point, with respect to heat, that Keith at GDE says you can disconnect the coolant lines that run to the EGR although he does not recommend EGR removal.

Yes indeed, PapaIndigo those of us with GDE tunes probably don't need another oil cooler. Not everyone has a GDE tune, and having more ways to deal with the quirks of the CRD methinks is a good thing.

WRT recommending removal of a Federally mandated emission control device, well, no, of course he is not going to recommend that. His lawyer won't let him recommend that!

I have used the ford filter when I had no time to go to Napa. Walmart sells it so it would fit. I have never seen my crd over heat. Temp go up from hard driving but come down fast, yep sure. With the gde tune the egr is not doing much to add heat and I'm not sure about the extra plumbing of oil a big leak and loss of oil pressure would be catastrophic to the engine so why add more points of failure for little gain.

For all that trouble, I would put in a bypass oil filter instead. It uses a similar spin on adapter plate. It would also cool the oil, probably just as much as the cooler you're looking at, but it would clean the oil to boot.

I like it a lot but where would you mount the filters?

now that is a better idea. filtering more soot out would reduce wear. my only concerns would be where to put the setup and how fail prof are the hoses.

I have put a lot of thought into it, but not done anything about it yet. My initial thoughts were to tuck it up against the floor pan under the passenger seat, symetrically opposite the transfer case. Probably need to get a special bracket made up, preferably one that would swing down and hold the filters upright for changeing. That would not be too far from where the current oil filter is now, and it would be tucked up pretty high for progection. The bracket could also include a skid plate of sorts for additional protection.
