People always gawk at this picture, but it's obsolete now 
My new favorite tow rig is my wifes 08 Grand Cherokee 3.0L 
Yes it needs some AirLifts and load range E tires, as evidenced by the sagging Cherokee rear end. But for tugging, it's a monster. 400 miles across & back in Michigan - not ONE downshift! 14-15 mpg! When it gets to a hill it doesn't slow down a bit. It just gets a little louder. Now if I can just retract that comment I said to her about her Jeep needing a firmer butt... |

27', 5600#. Well within the tow weight of the WK (7200#), just a bit out of limit for the KJ, but the KJ went to the Smokeys last summer and turned 13 mpg without blowing up... |

Awesome!! As a new Grand Cherokee CRD owner, I can't wait to throw a load behind it and see what she'll do. I should be getting the InMotion loaner programmer this week. 443ft/lbs at 1600rpm baby!

The USA tow ratings aren't correct, as they are the same in the book as for the 3.7l V6 which is a far LESS capable tug than our CRD motors. Go with the Euro rating, which is more accurate b/c the Euro market gets the same exact vehicle as the USA CRD, and has been tested for their ratings body. BTW: I have pulled 6840 lbs of generator with my CRD, and got 18mpg doing it. The CRD pulled it easily. Yea, I knew something big was back there, but it didn't complain about accelerating. Granted, it has a lot less wind resistance than that travel trailer. I also pulled a 7.5x20 enclosed car hauler (Empty only) at about 2600 lbs... And the KJ couldn't get above 65mph. THAT was entirely b/c of the wind resistance. |

3500kg/7700lbs is the rating in Germany, my hitch is rated at that without sway control. Be aware that towing in Europe is LIMITED TO 100KPH/62MPH ONLY! Also have you looked at investing in E-spec lights that you can adjust the beam hight when loading the rear? it will keep you from "shinning squirrels" |

Pulling ~5000lbs at 27' long is at the upper end of what the KJ CRD will do with top-of-the-line sway control (Hensley). I would not want to go any heavier at that length. Pulling a short heavy load is a completely different experience than pulling something with large frontal area, and with long high sides that act as wind sails when the trucks fly by. It's not the weight, but a matter of the tail wagging the dog. - Chris |

Well down hill towing the race car and not using the brakes and hitting about 70mph in Germany I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. More or less that was from not getting the load balanced on the trailer I was using, it is hard to do with a FWD racecar. It put the weight of the car just behind the rear axle of the trailer. |

Also have you looked at investing in E-spec lights that you can adjust the beam hight when loading the rear? it will keep you from "shinning squirrels" 'ST' rated tires are only rated for 65 mph and that's my max speed. Too many stories of trailer tire cords becoming large circular saws and slicing off camper kitchens or (ugg) bathrooms. Yes I've looked at the adjustable lights. Believe it or not, it's cheaper to move the whole rear end with a set of AirLift 1000's. The pictures at the top are before the AirLifts were installed (TBD on Grand Cherokee, but wife agrees it's needed). P.S. The Hensley Arrow people ROCK! They have a policy that you can get a different drop tow bar if you send the old one in and pay shipping. 'Cept I'm so close when I got the Durango and went from 2" -> 4" I just drove over and picked it up. Now I need a 6" for the WK and I'm waiting to hear when it'll be dropped off at my house. Can't beat that service for a 6 year old hitch... |
