I use the Mobil 1 M1-301 filter because it's bigger and brings the total capacity up to an even 7 qts.

Wix or Napa Gold (same thing) are darn good filters no matter the application. Check around for best price.

I use the same one a Ford truck uses, the NAPA (Wix) 1515. It holds one full quart.

At the risk of starting the oil filter war again, this is for information only.
It has been discussed at length before and opinions vary. Research and choose wisely.
Fram is and has been junk. At one time, Cummins even stated that there is NO warrantee if you use a Fram on their engines!
There are many internet sites and 4X4 sites that have done oil filter comparisons, from size to filtration quality (or lack there of), to construction, etc. Fram comes in last place and worst in quality. Wix (Napa) is towards the top. First place goes to the loudest and changes with the wind. (Note extremely good quality towards the top of the list. I choose not to pay that much for a Top-of-the-line filter).

The stock factory oil filter has a minimal amount of filter media. The same mounting footprint is the same one for the Ford V8’s (Fram PH8A, Napa (Wix) 1515, etc.) only there is over double the amount of filtration area and it holds one quart of oil.

My humble opinion is that since I run synthetic oil for 7500 miles, and it gets real black, it’s a fact that the larger the filter area the better. That is one of many reasons I run the larger filter.

This might even be listed in the Tech section. If not, it should be.

Sir Tim, that happens in any diesel car AFAIK! Do not let the blackness of the oil mislead you, it is completely normal on all diesel cars that I know of.

I run the stock oil filter. It is a well made filter designed to last 12,000 miles. It works for me and I have the uoa's to back it up. Lots of will-fit filters out there. Not many are spec'd for the CRD.

Yes I know that diesel oil get black fast and that is Ok. Thanks.
The filter that the CRD uses is from another application and was well discussed as to why they used it.
The Motorcraft filter is a good choice as it is a full quart filter also. It was rated towards the top of the list. The stock filter is only 1/2 quart.
The size of the particles that both filters trap is the same. I myself (and others) just choose to have the larger media so there is less pressure drop as it loads up over time. Yes it might be overkill and yes the oil might go 20K or 30K before it really must be changed, but I choose to change before the required intervals and use larger than normal (stock) filters.
Part of this is because of just living where for 4 months of the year it NEVER gets below 90 degrees!!!!
Daytime temps 15 inches above the nice black asphalt roads is usually around 145 degrees. Regular maintenance is a must unless some like to walk in this refreshing environment.

Amsoil is the best there is. No if's, and's, or debate.

Not sure if the Amsoil EAO34 (for the 3.7 KJ motor) also fits the CRD, so PM JJsKJ or go directly to www.hotrodoil.com He will take good care of you.

(which reminds me, JJ if you wander in here, I haven't forgotten, I'll be in-touch within the next day or two).

Pretty sure that the Amoil EAo filters are made by Donnelson. Even if they are not, the Donnelson filters are well respected in just about every industry.... commercial trucks, Ag equipment, and marine engines.

Haven't ever looked into whether Donnelson makes a filter we could use. Maybe someone here can provide that info. I use Donnelson for everything on my Cummins ISX, so knowing a Donnelson equivalent for the CRD would be good information. I know that Donnelson filters are priced reasonable.

I figured the bypass element should provide a bit more soot control. I planned on doing a used oil analysis, but then I sold the vehicle to my buddy. Hopefully he can share any thoughts at the next oil change.
