Post subject:  Quality Fuel Filter?

Hey y'all,

Before I drive my new CRD across the country (I bought it in Atlanta, near my parent's place, while I live in Phoenix), I need to do some pre-trip prep work. This includes cleaning the MAP, v6 airbox/amsoil filter, new serpentine belt, and replacing the fuel filter. We have no idea what the previous owner did as far as routine maintenance, so better safe than sorry...

Anyways. Y'all got any good recommendations for a fuel filter? Or is the OEM filter (WIX 33647) just fine?

The OEM wix is your only option in filters without changing out the fuel head. Napa has them a little cheaper than the dealer.

Hrm, okay. Thanks.

Is it worth paying a little extra this first time to change out the fuel head and go with a different filter, or will I not really see any difference?

Chances are you won't see any real difference, but if you can get your hands on a Stanadyne head, they have lots of optional parts that can be added on later. Things like a glass bowl for the bottom so you can see the detritus before you drain it, integral heater and lift pump caps... Lots of fun stuff. Oh, and replacement cartridges are like $5-$7 at the stanadyne dealers. The downside is you will lose the priming pump button, and won't have the integrated overheat-and-melt-the-plastic-then-it-leaks factory fuel heater.

In case you missed the hint there - unplug the factory fuel heater. IIRC, it is the two-wire plug on the driver's side of the front of the fuel head. Pull it out and check to see that it is dry. If not, the head is already cracked and you have an air / fuel leak that WILL cause you problems in the future. The heater is really not required, especially in Phoenix right now!

FYI -
OEM filter doesn't mention a filtering size - there's one line in the Factory Service manual about 3 micron but that's it
Wix says their's is 10 micron nominal - and they did not respond to an email asking about 3 micron.

you have to change the head to go to Racor or Stanadyne or an adaptor for the CAT - but they all have filters in the 2-3 micron range.

and last but not least - there's no industry standard on what the number means - it really needs to be quoted as an efficiency for stopping a given particle size - something like 99% at 3 or 99.7% at 5 or 90% at 10

personally I'm still using stock - I still have a few miles left on extended warranty - probably go to Cat or Racor then.

(particles in the 6-7 micron size should cause wear to the injection system)

Not sure I would worry about such fine filtration of 3 micron or less on a suction type fuel system. This is typical oil bypass filtration sizes that usually only allow for 2-4 gallons per hour even on a high capacity system like a semi truck engine. My Cummins ISX has a primary fuel filter of 50 microns and a secondary of 15 microns. That is Cummins spec and since they warranty my engine for 500,000 miles they might actually think that this size is all that is sufficient. Having too small of a filtration could actually hinder the pump being able to keep proper rail pressure.

Just a thought.

www.fleetfilter.com has Wix/Napa filters of any variety for 40-50% less than you will ever find them at a NAPA retail store. I just got a number of filters for different equipment with one filter being almost $100 at a NAPA store.... got that one from fleet filter for $48. Plus I got 10% off the price since I ordered more than $125 in filters.

More like 5 microns for the secondary. Cat's are between 7-10 primary and 2 micron secondary.(C-13 to C-15)

You say. The published data on the filter says something else. I decided to look it up before posting my comment. Cummins pretty picky on what filters the ISX likes, just like CAT. Cummins changed it's specs on filters after '02. Nary a fuel injector problem and averaging 7.3 mpg with average cargo weight of 38,000. My CRD has almost 60,000 miles... no egr replacement, no TC problem, nothing but stock and still runs like a champ.
