Post subject:  Rattle when idling - drive train grounding - fixed

Hello there

I have been experiencing some rattle originating somewhere in the front below the engine. Sounds like the drive train (engine and/or transmission) is touching the body/chassis somewhere. It is most noticeable when idling - reverse engaged, or if the jeep is leaning forward. Has anyone experienced similar? I have searched the forum for similar symptoms and some have indicated engine mounts, others have mentioned the engine skid plate as a possibility. How can I see if an engine mount needs replacing?

All the best,
Hjalti

Since you are in Iceland... I personally volunteer to inspect your beautiful women....

Sorry. Lost my head for a second. :D The easiest way I know of to check for a bad mount is to have someone shift from reverse to drive and back again while you look at the engine. If it rocks back and forth more than about an inch or so.. A mount has gone bad.

Beyond that, I would need to physically see the engine again (I haven't seen mine in almost 4 months) to tell you where they actually were in there. But it does sound like you have a bad mount, or the skid plate has been dented or loosened and it is rattling.

Personally, I would fully inspect / remove the skid plate and see if the noise stops. Tightening the skid is a LOT easier and cheaper than replacing any engine mount anyway.

If I'm not mistaken there has been cases of loose motor mount bolts too

I had the exact same symptoms, posted a couple weeks ago. I just took it in and the left motor mount was collapsed. This is the second time I've had motor mounts go out. Same symptoms.

Post subject:  Problem solved - engine mount broken

As promised I am reporting that the driver's side engine mount was broken. There was sth. broken inside it and rattled when shaken. I will add a picture if I find anything interesting when I open the thing.

There seem to be many cases of this problem. So think of engine mounts if you hear what people describe as thunks, rattle and grounding noise, appearing at or near idle, when you go over speed bumps, and in the case of the left mount when backing up.

Left motor mount failed on mine around 73k, the extended warrant came in handy again.

hmmm...what side is the driver's side in Iceland? Did you have the "port" side replaced?

My CRD has the exact symptoms you describe; had them since i bought it. I've had various technicians (jeep and private) inspect and find nothing.

I was having thunks, clunks, and severe vibration when idling in gear. I changed the right hand side (passenger side in the US) mount and my vibration when away completely. I had the vibration intermittently before, but pulling some bushes and stuff out, must have done the mount in. Mine had the same sound of something rattling when I took the mount out. All better now. Replacing these mounts seems to be a good place to start. Thanks all for the info.

I am driving on the same side of the road as you guys so this is the left mount... I opened the thing, there is a dampener inside and it had screwed itself loose and thus more vibration and the rattle of death... Not very refined system in my opinion. Will post a picture of the opened mount later.

Left (drivers side) motor mounts on national back order. Dealer has one on order, didn,t know for sure when part would be in. It has been on order for about a week.

Hello all, I've had a 06 CRD for 2.5 years now and this site has been very helpful.
I have the EXACT symptoms of the OP. How hard is it to change a motor mount??? My wife took our's to the dealer last week and I told them over the phone check motor mounts a possible cause of intermittant engine rattle/knock. They came back to her saying nothing about motor mounts and said it was "carbon knock" :x . They said I was messing up the fuel system with the ORM, I forgot to plug it back in when she took it in.

Hoping to get the Green Diesel Eco pkg soon.

Also there was a mention of loose mounts anyone have experience of that happening??

The dealer changed the mount for me and apparently it was not very difficult given that you have the proper tools, car lift etc.

Here are pics of the mount that I took apart to study what had happened:

The bell shaped thing in the lower part had turned loose:

An eight mm bolt was holding it in place:
