Well it finally came time to change my fuel filter. Did so with a factory unit, primed it and all was good until a couple of days later. Now it takes a few cranks longer to fire up, and hesitates at certain speeds. Any ideas from anyone would be great.

Sounds like air in the system. Probably needs to be bled again, my guess.

Look around the filter sealing surface and bleed screw for fuel seepage. Did you loosen the bleeder screw? Sometimes it's hard to tighten it enough to get it to stop leaking, and air gets in.

Is there a proper way or sequence to follow when bleeding air out of the system

open the bleed screw. put a towel or something under it and pump away. When the hissing stops your good to go.
Remember to tighten it back up

Let me ask this question, was anyone elses bleed screw improperly drilled such that fuel cannot escape the end of it and it has to leak out around the threads when bleeding?

Before I had a lift pump I put a clear plastic line on it and ran that into a bottle. You can then see when the air is all bled out.

If your asking me YES. Mine suffered from air in the fuel from the day I bought it less then a half a mine from the dealership  I first had a inline pump up by the filter to determine that was the problem before I dropped the fuel tank and put in the Dodge/Cummins pump. These things run a whole lot better when they get a continious supply of fuel
Mine felt like it was running out of fuel on the interstate ramp when I let up on the pedal. Another symptom was from a stop there were times when it seemed like forever before it responded to the pedal and it was to the point of being dangerous

If yours is still under warranty then have the dealer replace the fuel lines from the tank foward. That is if your dealer gives you something besides "can not duplicate"

Since mine has not leaked from the heater plug I'm still with the original. I think that air in the fuel filter is what causes the heater plug to get hot and melt.
